Teaching Plan of Module 4 A Social Survey- My Neighbourhood Writing

1.1 The Analysis of the Teaching Content The teaching plan is from Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press, Senior English, Book 1, Module 4. The topic is “A Social Survey- My Neighbourhood”, Period four, the Writing Part “Learn to use and and but”.

1. Teaching background 1.2 The Analysis of the Students

Students in this stage are quick in thought and they are eager to show what they know and they have a certain ability to read and write. But when they are writing or speaking, they lack the rational knowledge and a deeper understanding of the coordinating conjunction words for instance and and but.

2.1 Knowledge aims Learn to use and

and but and other coordinating conjunction words like: Neither...nor..., not only... but also, as well as, both... and

which belong to coordinating relation; words of clausal relations such as because, so, for; words of preference relation

or, either...or... etc. Moreover, while learning butit's necessary to remind the students that there are differences between the usage of but and however even if they have similar meaning. 2.

2.2 Ability aims Students are able to write a short paragraph by using different coordinating conjunction words properly in order to improve their writing skills. 2.3 Emotion aims To reinforce the students’ awareness of culture and cooperation.

To build up the students’ self-confidence by expressing their ideas.

2. Improve the students’ expressing ability and writing skills.

in exercises.

2. The ability to choose the proper conjunction words while writing a composition.

4. Teaching methods 4.1 Communicative Approach

Encourage students to speak English in class, for instance, doing the daily duty report. 4.2 Task-based language teaching

Ask the students to accomplish tasks to apply knowledge to practice. 4.3 Interactive Method Lead the students to be active in answering questions and more involved in class discussions and group work.

Multi-media (interactive whiteboard, ppt) and blackboard.

5. Teaching aids

Step 1 Greetings and Warm-up.

Greet the students as usual. Warm them up by doing a word competition in groups. [video clip of students being actively involved in the competition]. (Design reason: to get them more involved in the class and review of the new words.) Duty report. Ask two students to talk about their city and neighbourhood and their past experience. Design reason: a revision of the last lesson to see if they already known the way of describing a place.

Step 2 Lead-in

Show the students several pictures and ask them to form sentences by using conjunction words “and” and “but”.

Design: to increase the students interests by showing pictures and lead them to think about when and how they use “and ” and “but”.

Step 3 Explanation

6. Teaching Procedures Task 1 To get the extended meaning and usage of and and but

Ask the students to discuss in pairs to match the sentences with their meanings in order to understand the other meanings and usages of and and but.

Task 2 Differentiation between but and however, but and although/though

While enplaning the usage of but, remind the students that there are several differences between but and however, but and although by doing exercises in pairs and ask them to present the answers.

Task 3 Exercises in the textbook

After the explanation of and and but, ask the students to finish the exercise in the textbook to consolidate their knowledge of and and but.

Task 4 Other conjunction words

Ask the students to discuss in groups to finish the translation exercises to check if they know any other

coordinating conjunction words and if they know how to use them.

Task 5 Summary of main coordinating conjunction words

After the translation exercise, the teacher does a summary on major coordinating conjunction words in different types to help them better understand the function of those expressions.

Task 6 Writing

Ask the students to try writing a short paragraph on the topic of “Should students use cell phones a t school?” and ask them to pay attention to the usages of conjunction words. The teacher provided several sample reasons and words for the students to refer to.

Task 7 Evaluation of the composition

When they finish writing the composition, the teacher choose several random pieces from the students. Show them on the screen and ask students to evaluate the compositions.

Design reason: by evaluating others’ work, the students can reflect on theirs as well as learn from mistakes.

Step 4 Review of the teaching content from the blackboard.

Ask students to recall the contents together.

Step 5 Summary of the performance of students.

Step 6 Homework

Ask the students to write the composition again and pay attention to the use of conjunction words correctly.
