Warming Up

T: Good morning, students. This class we will learn Unit 5 Enjoying Novels. At first let’s begin this lesson with enjoying a video from the movie“Pride and Prejudice”.

2

T:Do you like the movie? Ss:Yes, we do. T: The movie “Pride and Prejudice” is adapted from the novel “Pride and Prejudice” written by Jane Austen. There are many novels in China and foreign countries. Which novels do you like better, English novels or Chinese novels?

Ss: (Answers may be different.) T: Yeah, OK. As we all know, many people have adapted the novels for many classic plays, movies, games, cartoons and so on, which have given us much fun. But have you ever read any novels written in English? Now Let’s enjoy some wonderful sentences quoted from the famous novels.

1.

It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife.—

Pride and Prejudice

2.

Perhaps that is not possible for any one. But it has been the study of my life to avoid those weaknesses which often expose a strong understanding to ridicule.Such as vanity and pride.

—

Pride and Prejudice

3.

If God had given me wealth and beauty, I would have made it as hard for you to leave me as it is for me to leave you now. I am not talking to you now through the medium of custom, conventionalities, nor even of mortal flesh. It is my spirit that addresses your spirit, just as if both had passed through the grave , and we stood at God’s feet, equal as w are.—

Jane Eyre

4.There is neither happiness nor misery in the world, there is only the comparision of one state with another, nothing more. He who has felt the deepest grief is best able to experience supreme happiness. We must have felt what it is to die, Morrel, that we may appreciate the enjoyments of living.—Le Comte de Monte-Cristo

5.Everything has the place where the delightful bird sings, also has poisonous snake hissing sound calling. —Tess of the d’Urbevilles
