Unit 4 Pygmalion

Step One: Warming up (3 minutes)

Show several pictures from the students working as volunteers.

Ask students some questions: 1）Have you ever done any voluntary work? If so, what kind of job did you do? 2）How did you feel about it? 3）Why did you work as a volunteer? Step Two: Mind-mapping (8 minutes) 1)

Ask the students to read the first paragraph and look through the photos, predicting what the passage will talk about. 2)

Ask the students to draw a mind-map showing the structure of the passage and give the reason (i.e. sum up the main idea of each part. Step Three: Sorting out the detailed information and doing inference (20 minutes)

Last class, students have scanned the passage and have found out some detailed

information of each part. Task One: 1. Sort out the detailed information about the difficulties that the writer has met as a volunteer teacher. 2. Help students have a conclusion about the basic problems leading to those difficulties. 3. Help students infer the writer’s emotional feelings when meeting those difficulties. (When doing inference, students are required to find the facts and details in the passage) Task Two: 1. Sort out the detailed information about the positive things about living in a village in Papua New Guinea. 2. Infer the characters of the local people. 3. Infer the writer’s emotional feelings towards the local people and the local lives. Task Three:

Step Four: Critical thinking (5 minutes)

Make the students have a deep thought about two aspects: 1. The meaning of teaching local students science. 2. How to treat the cultural conflicts as a volunteer. From the writer’s emotional changes, infer the writer’s qualities.
