Aims and requirements ●To develop the students’ reading ability

●To listen and speak using the vocabulary and everyday English in this unit

●To learn and use grammars in different situation ●To write a diary stating your first day at senior high

Teaching procedures

Period 1: Production and Reading Step 1: Warming up 1. Warming up by Questions 1.

What’s your new senior high school?

2.

Do you like the school? Why? 3.

How many students are there in your new class? 4.

Do you have great confidence to learn English well? 2. Warming up by discussing Hello boys and girls, now we’re going to learn something about the new life at senior high, and now I would like you to discuss a problem:

How to find something new and write it in the coming years at senior high?

What are the new things at school?

New things at school means you should watch and write things that happen in the school or in your student life that you seldom see before, rather than things that happen in a factory or, at your home. It also means you should write special or new things, rather than something that’s ordinary(普通的).

Is it a new thing at school? : Sophie saw and wrote news about how the students ran to the dining hall when the bell rang so as to get their lunch as soon as possible. Judgment: It is not school news. Most of the students have the same experience as these students, so it is not “new” at all.

But: If you write about a boy trying to get his lunch in a strange way, it would be interesting to read. : David wrote news about a bird that flew to his house and wouldn’t leave.

Judgment: Do you like to read this news? Almost all the schools have anniversaries, and they all do the same thing.

But: You can find something special in the anniversary and tell the readers your discoveries(发现). How to find new things at school?

Just be sensitive(敏感的)

to things around you and let your curiosity (好奇

心)guide you.

From now on, open your eyes and your ears and look for interesting things around your student life.

3. Warming up by studying vocabulary Turn to page 113,

Step 4: Reading practice Read the following passage within 5 minutes and make a better choice to each problem.

One of the schools that offered me a full ride had an informal dinner one night in the spring. Considering my parents' financial difficulties, I decided to drive the 45 minutes and attend. At first, all I had planned to do was smile politely, eat free food, and listen quietly. But I surprised myself. At dinner the president of the university talked about the wonderful activities on campus including guest lectures and social gatherings. He also made it perfectly clear that free food would be offered at all future events. He continued with explanations of professors, he spoke, I began to realize that this school, though not as good as my first choice, might be the best one for me. It seemed meeting with many great programs. It seemed challenging yet caring.

As the president ended his speech, we clapped politely and pushed back our chairs. As I walked out of that door, a feeling of comfort washed over me. Looking at

the campus that night, I realized that I would be spending the next four years right there.

In all honesty, my university is not as well-known as my "dream" university. However, it turned out to be the right choice of schools for me.

1. How did the author feel when he started to read the letter? A. He was full of joy.

B. He was lost in his dream

C. He was worried about the money D. He was uncertain which school to go to 2. We can learn from the passage that the parents were ____. A. honest B. strict C. supportive D. decisive 3. In paragraph 5, "offered me a full ride" can be replaced by "____." A. would pay for transport to the school B. would show me around the campus C. would offer free meals at all events D. would charge me nothing for tuition 4. What does the author mainly want to say? A. You second-choice college may actually be your best fit. B. You should consider comfort in your choice of schools C. You should try your best to attend your dream school D. Your choice of schools should be based on their fame. (Keys: 1.D 2.C 3.D 4.A) Step5:Homework 1.

Try to describe your classroom and your English teacher orally. 2.

My new senior school yard is so large and beautiful that I have never seen before. My favorite activity in first grade is attending the lecture in English in my new class. My first English teacher is called Miss Wang, a young pretty girl who just graduated from university. Her spoken English is very good. My new senior school is a large, modern, and beautiful one, whose school yard looks like an amazing and brilliant garden with trees, grass and flowers around the buildings. There is a standard playground and a well-equipped lab building in our school. The classrooms are also well-equipped and pleasant with a computer and a screen in each one. We can learn much that comes from the websites unloaded by the teachers. Nobody is bored in class and have fun. All the teachers are enthusiastic and friendly and their teaching ways are nothing like that of the teachers at my junior school.

Mrs. Zhao is our new English teacher. She thinks that reading and writing are both important in learning English. She makes us speak, talk, practice and listen by ourselves. She wants to improve our pronunciation and help us with our handwriting. We all like her attitude to education and the behavior of us shows that she is loved and welcome. We study more than ten subjects at senior grade one, they are Chinese, math, English, physics, chemistry, biology, history, geography, IT, PE and so on. But my reading comprehension seems poorer and I decided to word hard at it. We are all hard-working. I think we must make great progress in all the lessons with the help of teachers.
