I. Analysis of the teaching material

The topic of this unit is inventors and inventions. This passage is to describe an invention with clear scientific research stages. The students have learnt this unit, yet not clear about the logical relation among the passage and sentences. With the purpose of recalling the passage and having a deep understanding of the logical relation of the passage, I summarize the passage into several sentences and revise it into a short passage with gap filling to help them understand the logical relation among the sentences. The major aim of this period is to get students improved in gap filling by understanding the logical relation among the sentences, based on reviewing this passage.

II. Analysis of the students

The students are senior 3students from common class of Peicai Middle School, so their English is not good. They have learnt this unit and have known the tips of finding the key words to finish the gap filling. However, they seldom try to analyze the logical relations among the sentences. So I choose this passage, which they are familiar with, as an example to analyze the logical relations among the sentences. And task-based strategies and group competitions will be adopted through the whole lesson.

VI. Teaching Procedure Step I Warming up & Revision 1. Warming up: Show the analysis of the gap filling from year 2011 to 2015 Purpose: Draw students’ attention on the structure of the passage when doing the gap filling. 2. Revision: Ask students to put the events from the passage into the right order.

Task I: Put the events into correct order. (Pay attention to the underline words) 1.

I decided to seize the opportunity to get recognition for my successful idea by sending my invention to the patent office. 2.

Purpose: To recall what the passage is mainly about, let the students have an understanding that there are some logical relations within a passage and get the students ready for the next step.

Step II. Analysis of the logical relations among the sentences.

1. Task II: Choose correct sentences to fill in the blanks.

One day, my mother called me and told me she had a problem. There were some snakes in her courtyard. She asked if I could help her get rid of them. I found that it was a chance for me to distinguish myself by inventing something merciful that would catch snakes but not harm them. 1

After doing some research, I only found some powders designed to kill snakes. 2.

Step III. Practice and consolidation. 1. Task III: Practice 1). ________They say it’s boring to hear the same songs all the time. But other people enjoy hearing Muzak in public places. They say it helps them relax and feel calm. One way or another，Muzak affects everyone. Some farmers even say their cows give more milk when they hear Muzak!

Purpose: To enhance the skill of analyzing the logical relations among the sentences. Have a group completion to check their understanding. (A level 2 points/question; B level 3 points/question; C level 5 points/question) By adding different points to their groups according to the students’ level, encourage students of different levels to show themselves.

2. Task IV: Consolidation. Finish Passage 16 on P78 《高考》

Passage 16 Everyone has feelings of anxiety, nervousness, tension and stress from time to time. Here are a few ways to help us manage them.

1_________We all think we know how to relax. But calming down in front of the TV or computer isn’t true relaxation. Depending on what you’re watching or doing, it could even make you more nervous. Walking or hiking can offer additional benefit or exercise. Invite a friend or two—or a family member—along and enjoy feeling connected to people as well.

Think positively. A great way to keep our minds off the worry track is to focus our thoughts on things that are good, beautiful and positive.5_________
