Teaching procedures Step 1

Draw the following timeline on the blackboard and tell the students the difference among the Simple Present Tense, the Present Continuous Tense and the Simple Past Tense.

Give students some common time expressions: yesterday, last night, a month ago, yesterday afternoon, last week, ten years ago and make sure they can use the simple past tense to talk about things in the past.

e.g.

got up yesterday morning had breakfast went to school had lunch did my homework had supper yesterday evening. went to bed

yesterday afternoon.

Teach them how to form the simple past tense a, regular verbs:

Write about the past. Present the following words and let students change them into the simple past tense forms. 1. start → started

Then ask students to fill in the blanks with the past tense forms of these words. Ask several students to share their answers. b, irregular verbs:

We form the simple past tense of irregular verbs differently. We do not add ‘ –ed’
