S: Pride and Prejudice T:Yes, you are so clever. It’s pride and prejudice. This movie is adapted from Jane Austen’s novel; I still remember the first sentence of the novel: everyone knows that a single man with a fortune must be in want of a wife. So it is a love story. Do you want to know the main idea of the novel? Let’s look at the short introduction. (播放视频2) T:(after enjoying)So it is very interesting, I think it worth our enjoying, right? So today, we will study unit 5 Enjoying novels. Now, let’s check your yesterday’s homework: talk about literature in your group. Now it’s your show time, every group chooses one student to show your duty report. (学生来前方展示PPT) Group 1: We will talk about ancient Chinese novels.

“Journey to the West"
“A Dream of Red Mansions”
They are called “the Four Chinese Classical Novels” by Chinese, which are the representations of Chinese novels. Next group, welcome.
When you are old 当你老了
---William Butler Yeats ——
When you are old and grey and full of sleep,
And nodding by the fire, take down this book,
And slowly read, and dream of the soft look
Your eyes had once, and of their shadows deep;
How many loved your moments of glad grace,
And loved your beauty with love false or true,
But one man loved the pilgrim Soul in you
And loved the sorrows of your changing face;
And bending down beside the glowing bars,
Murmur, a little sadly, how Love fled
And paced upon the mountains overhead
And hid his face amid a crowd of stars.
Poetry can bring us fantastic feelings. There are all kinds of poems about nature, love, friendship, pain and so on. It is wonderful to read poems. T: excellent, I like your voice very much! Thank you for your sharing! Group 3: English literature Our group have found some important novels in English literature, let’s enjoy them. This is: Gone with the wind. In our country, we translate it into “飘”or “乱世佳人”,which has adapted into TV series or movies. This one is “A tale of two cities”, and this one is “Oliver
twist” whose author is Charles Dickens. He was a sympathizer to the poor, the suffering, and the oppressed. And this one we have known is that pride and prejudice, I like the happy ending very much. T: very good. Your group has found many resources. Thank you. Group 4: after the three groups’ reports, let’s play a game: can you match the titles of these famous novels to the authors? T: oh, your group are so clever, you use the materials in our textbook, good job!
T: I think all of you have done a lot research in literature, let’s do a conclusion.
Look at the short flash which I have made. So Literature can divide into two parts: fiction and non-fiction. Poetry, novels, essays, and short stories are fiction. Non-fiction includes reports, recounts and descriptions. Until now, I think all of you have a clear idea about literature, as for me, I like novels best, because novels are very interesting. Do you like novels? Step 2:
Fast reading T: Ok, now let’s enjoy novels. Open your books turn to page 41, Read the text as quickly as possible, in two minutes, I'll time you. Have you finished? T: ok, look at the screen; tick this chart to show the issue each writer was most concerned with. T: How many English authoresses in the 19th century in the text? Who are they? What are their works mentioned in the text? S: There are five authoresses in the 19th century in the text. They are Jane Austen, the three Bronte sisters (Charlotte, Emily and Anne), and the writer known as George Eliot. "Pride and Prejudice" written by Jane Austen, "Jane Eyre" written by Charlotte Bronte and "Silas Mariner" written by George Eliot are mentioned in the text. T: Well done. Sit down, please. Do you understand this passage? Who can tell me the main idea of the passage?
S1: The main idea of the passage is to tell us the social background of that society. T: Well done. Who has different opinion? S2: The main idea of the text is to tell us men and women have equal rights. What's more, women are independent, not men's accessories. Women can do anything men can. Maybe women can do everything better than men. It is wrong to discriminate against women. T: Fantastic! Your pronunciation and intonation make you sound like a native speaker. I agree with your answer. If the others have different ideas, keep it and we'll discuss it after class, T: What's the purpose of writer? S4: The writing purpose of the author is to let us know the social background of that society, in which people not only discriminated against race, sex and religion but also cared about social status. Step3:Careful reading;
Give the students another three minutes to read the passage and then try to find out the answers to the questions T: Why do you think so many authoresses wrote about love and marriage?
S: This was the experience and the dilemma for these women writers and this was also a common longing for most women T: Which writer was the most reserved in her descriptions of feelings?
Why do we still read her books? S: Jane Austin was most reserved in her description of personal feelings. We read her books for their humor, irony and characterization. T: In which way were George Eliot's books similar to those of Charles Dickens? S: George Eliot's books were concerned with the way social pressures made people behave badly or stupidly, while Charles Dickens novels are concerned with injustice in society. So both are concerned with society and its effect on the individual but they deal with it from different points of views. T: In which way were George Eliot's books similar to those of Charlotte Bronte? S: George Eliot describes the personal distress that people bring upon themselves when they behave badly according to the expectations of society at that time. Charlotte Bronte describes how emotional necessity makes people behave against the expected behavior of society. So they are both concerned with how a person's feelings affect their decisions. Step 4: Discussion: T: To marry for love, or to marry for money? What is your understanding of marrying well? (Students discuss openly) Step 5: Conclusion
Do a conclusion of this period. Step 6: homework Do a duty report about the discussion.
