Book 8 Unit 2 Cloning Using language 2 listening and speaking 广西博白县中学
授课人:闭斌
Teaching material:
This lesson is chosen form Book 8 Unit 2 Using language 2, which topic is Cloning. The second part of Using language mainly practice the listening and speaking. After finishing this part, students will have a better understanding of cloning. Meanwhile, students can freely express their own opinions about cloning basing on what they have learned before. Through discussing with partners, students will develop the right attitudes towards cloning.
Teaching aims:
1) Knowledge and skills: Enable students to get information through the listening, to gain the main idea and detail information of the radio. Also, master the expressions of agreement and disagreement.
2) Process and methods: Enable students to know and learn how to get the main idea from the radio and cooperate with partners. 3) Emotions, attitudes and values: Enable students to know the different ideas of animal testing and cloning, and also learn to express own idea using their own words.
Teaching important and difficult points:
Teaching important points: Listen to the radio and finish the exercise in the textbook, and express their own ideas about whether cloning is cruel.
Teaching important points:
1).Train the students listening skills, and practice the ability of speaking. 2).Make the students learn to get the main idea and detail information from listening.
Teaching aids: multimedia, blackboard, chalks
Teaching methods: task-based teaching approach; communicative approach;
Teaching procedure: Step1. Greetings and Warming up (2min)
Ask students one question:
Q1: What we have learnt last lesson?
Then, ask students to answer my question Q2: What we should do, if we want to do some research?
Do the experiment, do the survey, look through some information from books or reports…
Purpose of my design: (1) To catch Ss’ attention about the topic.
(2) To develop interest in the life of studying.
Step2. Task 1 Free talk (5min)
Q1: What do you know about animal testing?
Then, show some pictures of animal testing, and ask some students to tell the ideas. Answer: Animal testing, also known as animal experimentation or animal research, is the use of non-human animals in experiments. Q2: Is experimenting with animals cruel or not? Should Animals Be Used for Scientific or Commercial Testing?
Then, ask students to discuss the issue.
Support: 89% of scientists surveyed by the Pew Research Center were in favor of animal testing for scientific research. Against: Animal rights, and some animal welfare, organizations —
such as PETA and BUAV —
question the legitimacy (合法性) of it, arguing that it is cruel, poor scientific practice, poorly regulated.
Purpose of my design: (1) To let students have a better understanding about animal testing. (2) To make the students express their opinions.
Step3. Task 2 Listening Listen and see whether you agree with Xiao Qing or Rachel. Ⅰ. Read these statements before listening. Tick those that you hear. 1. Cloning will bring dead pets to life. 2. There were 627 experiments before Dolly was successfully cloned. 3. Cloning may help cure serious illnesses. 4. It’s a dead end.
5. Dolly the sheep was “middle-aged” when she was born. 6. So your grandmother would be able to start her life all over again and live much longer.
Ⅱ. Listen to the tape again and then work with a partner to fill in the chart.
Ⅲ. Look at the script, listen to the tape once again and read the material. Xiao Qing (XQ) and Rachel Brown (RB) are discussing whether cloning is cruel to animals or not.
RB: Xiao Qing, do you think cloning’s cruel?
XQ: What do you mean by that? The scientists are doing a wonderful job. Soon they may be able to bring people’s favourite pets back to life!
RB: Yes, I know. But doesn’t it seem cruel to you that it took 276 experiments before Dolly was successfully cloned? Think of all those live cells and eggs that died in order for Dolly to be born. I don’t approve of that!
XQ: But, Rachel, be reasonable. Isn’t it always like that with a new science? This is the way people learn to do things better.
RB: I suppose so — but they also make the animals do such unnatural things. One poor cow was made to give birth to a bison. What was the poor creature to think when it saw its baby? XQ: I don’t quite understand why so many people are against cloning. I think the scientists need a bit of encouragement. Think of the benefits. Cloning may help medical science to produce cures for serious illnesses.
RB: Yes, I know and I agree with that. It’s just that I don’t agree with the methods.
XQ: Why not?
RB: Well, I think it’s a dead end. Dolly the sheep was “middle-aged” when she was born because her DNA came from a middle-aged “mother”. Cloning your grandmother would mean a new baby started life as an old lady! XQ: Really? I never thought of that.
RB: And it weakens the species. Cloning means that there’s less variety in the species. So the animas may not be able to resist a particular illness and they might die out. XQ: Oh dear! And that was just what you and I were trying to avoid. In spite of all these, don’t you think scientists would still be able to solve the problems?
Purpose of my design:
(1) To let students practice the listening skills, and do some exercise to enhance the ability of gaining the main idea and detail information. (2) Enable students to know and learn how to get the main idea from the radio
Step4. Task 3 Speak (10min) Q1: Whose ideas do you agree with? What is your opinion about animals cloning? Get ready to have a class discussion. Think about the reasons for your point of view. Use your own ideas as well as those in the text.
Some useful expressions: Then, ask students to discuss the questions in pairs.
After that, I will ask some students to show their opinions
Q2: What would you want to turn into if you had a chance?
Purpose of my design: (1) Master the expressions of agreement and disagreement, and enable students to know the different ideas of cloning, and also learn to express own ideas using their own words. (2) Enable students to know and learn how to cooperate and commuhicate with partners.
Step5. Task 4 Homework (5min) Do the homework on the bellows, and you will have a better understanding of unit. 1. Revise the whole unit. 2. Finish all the exercises in this unit.
Purpose of my design:
Homework is so important and necessary for to master the knowledge they learned after class. It will check whether the Ss achieve the teaching aims.
Blackboard design:
Pros:
1.
contribute to many life-saving cures and treatments. 2.
no adequate alternative to testing on a living, whole-body system. 3.
make better research subjects than human beings because of their shorter life cycles.
Cons:
1.
cruel and inhumane. 2.
unreliable predict results in human beings. 3.
95% of animals used in experiments are not protected. 4.
different from human beings and therefore make poor test subjects.
