Unit 3

Inventers and inventions Teaching Aims:

1. Arouse the students’ interest in invention.

2. Enable the Students to learn the differences between a discovery and an invention. 3. Improve the students’ reading and speaking ability and cultivate students’ creativity and imagination. Teaching Important Points: 1.

Make the students have a good understanding of the text. 2.

Improve the students’ speaking ability.

Teaching Difficult Points: 1.

Help the students to know the inventing procedures and the application for the patent in the passage

2.

Cultivate students’ creativity and imagination. Teaching Methods: 1.

Skimming, scanning, task-based method to let the students understand the whole text. 2.

Individual, pair or group work to make every student work in class. Teaching Aids: 1.

the multimedia 2.

the blackboard 3.

the tape recorder Teaching Procedures: Step 1: Greetings

Greet the whole class as usual.

Step2 : Review

Review the new words and useful expressions. Step3: Warming-up

1. Arouse the students’ interest in invention and inventor by asking the students some questions: 1. What is the invention?

It is made of plastics and metal. It looks like a small box. The invention can contact someone while you are on the move. 2. Who is the inventor? The inventor is from America. He is one of the fathers of inventions. The inventor invented the electric bulb. Everybody knows he invented the electric bulb. A lamp can’t give light without electricity. Can electricity be invented? Is electricity an invention or a discovery? Now, look at the following pictures, do any of them show discoveries?

2. Discussion:Discuss the difference between an invention and a discovery and give a definition of

1

them. An invention is something that is created by human being through the use of

imagination and experimentation, such as computer, telephone, television.

A discovery merely makes known something that already exists in nature,

such as the discovery on the New Continent by Columbia.

Step4: Lead-in Do you know the stages every inventor must go through before they can have their invention approved? Here give you some similar stages used in research, please work out a suitable order. 2. Finding a problem

3. Doing research

5.Thinking of a creative solution 4. Testing the solution

6. Deciding on the invention 1.Applying for a patent

Step5: Reading 1. Skimming: As you read the following passage, check the order you wrote above to see whether it follows the correct stages in producing an invention. The stages in making an invention.Stages in the Parainventing process1Example in this story3Identify three Think of a creative solutionpossible approaches: choose one2Find a problemThe snakes must be removed but not harmedLook for methods Do researchof removal; the habits of snakes

4,5,6Test the solution Try three times to several times make it work efficiently7,8Deciding on theThis means the inventionsolution is Apply for a patentrecognized

2. Scanning: Ask the students to read the text again, and then finish the multiple choices: 1. The purpose in writing this text is: c A. to show us how to trap the snakes but not to kill them B. to tell people how to apply for a patent of the writer's new idea C. to introduce the writer's new idea of trapping the snakes and her application for a patent D. to tell the readers how to get a new idea and make it a patent 2. The biggest advantage of the writer's new idea is that: d A. it makes the snakes move slowly B. it makes the snakes hardly bite us C. it is easier for us to kill the snakes without hurting ourselves D. it is easier for us to catch the snakes without killing them 3. What instruments were used for catching the snakes? c A. a bowl, ice-cubes, male perfume B. a bowl, a bucket, female perfume C. a small net, ice-cubes, a bucket D. a small net, a bucket, powders 4. Which statement is true according to the text? b

2

A. The snakes were so sleepy in the second attempt that they couldn't bite the writer at all. B. Your product must be different from everybody else's if you want to receive a patent. C. The writer decided to send her invention to the Patent Office the moment she succeeded in catching the snakes. D. If an application for your product proves to be valid, you can get a patent immediately. 5. According to the text, which subject do you think can be given a patent? c A. A new star discovered by a scientist. B. A new novel written by Huo Da. C. A new way to make dirty water clean. D. A new kind of grass found in a mountain which can be used as a medicine. 3. Group work Read the text carefully and prepare some questions according to the passage , then exchange the questions with the whole class. 4. Detailed reading: Read the text carefully and try to get more details from the text and then fill in the form. Why the writer tried a new approachesThere only seemed to be powdersdesigned to kill snakes but herparents would not like her to hurt/harmthese living creatures.Three1.She placed the frozenbowl over the attemptssnakes’habitat and the ice-cubeson Firstly, removingtheir habitat. Secondly, attractingthem into a Threetrap using male or female possibleapproachesperfume or food.Thirdly, coolingthe snakes so that they become sleepyand could be easily caught..Three Time length : OvernightattemptsResult : The snakes were very sleepy, top of the bowl and finally covered the whole thing with a large bucket.Time length two hours.Result: The snakes werelessactive, butwere still too fast and disappearedinto a hole in the wall.2.She froze the bowl and ice-cubes again but placedthem over the snakes’habitat. Then she covered the bowl with the bucket.

but once picked up, they tried to bite her.3.She repeated the earlier procedure and used a small net and monitored carefully.Time length: OvernightResult: She collected the passivesnakes and releasedthem all back intothe wild.1.Fill in the formand file the The steps patent applicationwith the Patent of receivingOffice.a patent2. Being examined.3.Application will be published 18months later.

Step6: Extension 1. Since you have learned the text, now choose one from the text and use the scientific stages to design a new invention to solve it. Suggested solution to problem 2: 1. Remove the bottom from each of the bottles. Stick the bottles together with the glue to form a solid wall. 2. Cover them with the fishing net to hold them secure.

3

3. Pour water down the bottles to encourage plants to grow up inside them. 4. Make a roof of empty bottles. This means it will not be too heavy. 5. Put the roof on after the plants have grown so that the walls are very secure and steady. 2. Now pretend you are a patent officer and it is your job to decide whether an application should be considered valid or not. Suggested answers: 1. This is a new kind of meat produced by introducing plant genes into traditional animal meat genes. As this can be considered as new variety of animal, it cannot receive a patent. 2. The new part of this is the computer program training, so it cannot receive a patent. 3. It is a discovery and not an invention. So it cannot receive a patent. 4. It solves the problems in a practical way. It can be given a patent. 5. A book is a work of literature and cannot be given a patent. Step7: Writing task:

What kind of things will you invent? Will you apply for a patent? What the advantages might be of getting a patent?
