Step1. Warm-up

Lead-in

Guessing game

Give some main stentnces about animals and ask studengs to guess what animals they are. Step2. Pre-listening

1.

Show the pictures in Part A1 and ask students: Look, there are some animals. Do you know their names? Present the new words snake, camel and ant. Teach these words in time. 2.

Show more pictures of animals and get students to try their best to talk about their familiar animals like this: What animal is it? Can you tell us something about this animal? Are you afraid of this animal? Step3. While-listening 1.

Tell students: Mr. Wu and Suzy are also talking about animals. Listen to their conversation and tell me which animals they’re talking about. Play the tape for students to answer the question. ( giraffe, snake, camel and ant ) 2.

Listen to the tape again and put the pictures in the correct order. 3.

Tell students: Suzy is afraid of animals. Mr. Wu wants to help her . He is telling her some interesting things about animals. Present the following questions: How many bones does a giraffe have in its long neck? ( There are only seven bones in it .) (2)

What do snakes do in winter? ( they sleep all the time and eat little or

nothing in winter.) (3)

How long can camels live without water? ( They can live for a long time .)

Play the tape for students to listen to and answer the questions above. Get students to listen to the tape again and complete Part A2 on page 63. Invite four of the students to read the complete sentences to check the answers. Step4. Post-listening 1.

Say to students: Now you know something about these four animals. Can you use your notes to help Suzy write a thank-you letter to Mr. Wu? Turn to page 64 and finish Part A3.

Invite two students to read the second and third paragraphs to check the answers then get all the students to read the letter together. 3.

Get students to discuss in groups to find some useful expressions. Then the teacher checks if they can understand them well. 4.
