I. Teaching aims and learning objectives 1. learn the use of “can” and “can’t”; 2. talk about ways to help others; 3. learn to be polite and helpful to others.

II. Teaching contents 1. New words and phrase: ability, believe, raise, plant trees, help an old man, clean up the park, give a seat to someone on the bus, collect things for Project Hope, visit an old people’s home, need … most, send sth. to sb., collect some books for the children, raise sth. for sb., look out; 2. New sentences: How cool!

Believe it or not!

Some families are not even able to pay for pens and notebooks.

III. Focus of the lesson and predicted area of difficulty To talk about how to help others.

IV. Teaching procedures

Step 1 Lead-in

T: Look at the first picture. What can the fish do? Fish can sleep with eyes open.

Fish are able to sleep with their eyes open. Fish have the ability to sleep with their eyes open. 【设计意图：让学生对can有一个全新的认识，带着这个认知进入本节课的话题。】

1. What can he do? T: Look at the next picture. What can the he do? S: He can play basketball./ He is able to play basketball. /He has the ability to play basketball. T: What about the third picture? S: He can run. /he is able to run. /he has the ability to run. T: Next, What abilities do they have? S: He can play table tennis. /he can swim. /they can plant trees. T: So different people have different abilities. Do you think so? Then what ability do you have? /which ability do you want to have? ( ask two-five students to answer) 【设计意图：通过图片教学，引出单词ability，鼓励学生反复操练have the ability to do sth.，也为引出Comic strip的内容做好了铺垫。】

Step 2 Presentation—comic strip.

1.

Free talk. T: Let’s move on. You see, birds can fly. What about the dog Eddie? Can he fly like Superman? OK, let’s learn comic strip.

2. Listen and answer.

T: Listen to the tape and answer the following three questions. Read the following questions first. (1) What does Eddie think of himself? (2) Can he fly? (3) What happened to Eddie?

T: Please take out a piece of paper, and write down the answers on it while listening. Don’t forget to close your English books. T: Please answer my questions. (after listening) S1: He thinks he is Superdog. S2: No, he can’t. S3: He fell down. 3. read ,recite, act out. T: Read the dialogue in pairs and try to recite each sentence. T: Work in pairs. One will play the role of Eddie, the other Hobo. Act the dialogue out. 【设计意图：利用图片导入对话，让学生准备一张纸，边听边写下答案，这样做可以确保学生集中注意力，而不是盲目地听信息。让学生参与角色扮演，帮助他们体会卡通人物的个性。】

Step 3 Welcome to the unit

1. lead-in. T: here is a video for you. We know Spider-man has great power, so he can help many people in life. What about you? Are you always ready to help others? We can learn from Daniel——join the helping hands club.

Part A

2. Helping Hands Club. T: Daniel and his classmates are members of the Helping Hands Club. Match the pictures below with the descriptions. Write the correct letters in the boxes. T: Please check the answers with your partners. 3. make a further study T: Read phrases in Part A carefully, explain some points 【设计意图：让学生独立完成图片匹配，然后让他们熟读重要词组，并进行当堂反馈。】

4. How can we help people in need?

According to these pictures, let students answer ‘How can we help people in need?’

(1)、(2)、(3), the(4)picture: Why do they have no money to go to school?——Because they are the children in poor areas.

Part B

1. Listen and answer.

T: Daniel and his classmates are talking about what they can do to help children in poor areas. Listen to the tape, and then answer the following questions.

(1) What can they send to the children in poor areas? (2) What are some families not able to do? 2. Read and explain

T: Read the dialogue after the tape more ,then explain some sentences 【设计意图：在练习听力的基础上培养学生正确朗读英语的良好习惯，教师应尽量利用课堂45分钟来为学生创造大声朗读英语的机会。】

3. Group work. T: it’s your turn to make up a dialogue about ‘what can we do for……’

【设计意图：为学生创设日常生活中经常发生的情境，让他们对照自身的言行举止考虑如何做些力所能及的事，鼓励学生成为乐于助人的中学生。】

From this lesson, we should be always ready to give a hand to others because it’s better to give than to take and God helps those who help others. And please remember this classic line “With great power comes great responsibility.”

Step4. Homework 1. Remember new words and useful expressions; 2. Recite Comic strip and Welcome to the unit Part B; 3. Preview Reading. Chat with them Do some shopping Clean their flats Read the newspapers ……
