Martha Liu Grade: English Reading I Teaching time: Teaching Aims Grade 7 40 minutes Aim of knowledge: By the end of the class, students will be able to master the language points of the two poems and appreciate the two poems. Aim of ability: By the end of the class, students will be able to write a simple poem.
Aims of emotion: By the end of the class, students will be able to show their affection to pets and enjoy their life.
Key Points and Predicted Areas of Difficulty Key points:
Lead students to appreciate the two poems. Predicted Areas of Difficulty: Students may have difficulty in writing a poem of their own.
Teaching Procedure Step 1
Revision and lead in (about 5 minutes) T: Do you have any pets? Ss:... Then T shows the pictures of a mouse, a parrot , a cat, a gold fish, a rabbit and a dog. And then ask students what a dog can do by showing another slide with six pictures on it.
Ss: A dog can run after a ball./ A dog can fight./ A dog can bite./ A dog can build a camp./ A dog can hide./ A dog can hunt. T: Last month, when I played with my daughter, we caught three fish in the nearly dried river. Then we kept the three fish in the fish tank. Two of them jumped out and died and now we have only one fish. Everyday, the fish swims happily and need little care as long as I give it water, food and oxygen. It does not need any touch just like a dog does. It causes little trouble to me. (T shows the picture of the fish and explain the sentence She isn’t any trouble.)
Step 2
A close reading of the two poems (about 15 minutes) T plays the song of Rain, Rain, Go Away. T: Recently, my 20-month old daughter loves this song very much. Actually it is a poem. It is very easy to understand and memorize. Do you know why? Ss: Maybe because the language of this poem is very simple.
Because each part has almost the same words.
Because the last word of each line ends with the same pronunciation. They all have

the sound of /ei/. ...(Students may give various answers.) T: Yes. You are all right. And /ei/ is called rhyme. Just like Chinese poems, English poems also have rhymes. Rhymes make the poems sound nice and easy to memorize. Look at the two poems from our text books. Can you find the rhyme?
T asks two of the students to read the poems and pay attention to their pronunciation. T: What are the rhymes in each poem?
S1: In the first poem, all rhymes with ball./ Wide rhymes with hide./ Tricks rhymes with sticks./ Bite rhymes with fight. / Friend rhymes with end. T: Then what about the second poem? S2:In the second poem, pet rhymes with bed./ Trouble rhymes with bubble./ Much rhymes with touch. T:Well done. (T shows the pictures of a brown bear sitting on a chair with a pear in its hands.) What about doing some exercise? Can you fill in the blanks with the words in rhyme? Ss: There’s a brown bear. Sitting in a black chair. Combing its brown hair. Eating a yellow pear. T: Actually, the beauty of poems not only lies in rhymes but also the rhetorical devices, such as personification. Personification means to present things just like human beings. They may have the feelings of human beings. Do we have personification in the two poems? Ss: Yes. The poems use he to talk about the dog and she to talk about the fish. T: Do you know why? Ss: Because the owners love their dog and fish very much. They are just like friends. T: Yes. When we write a poem, we can use personification in our poem. Usually poems have the beauty of structure. Look at the second poem. What does it look like? Ss: They look like two triangles.
T: Yes. You can see poems sometimes not only sound nice but also look beautiful. Right? Ss: right.
Step 3 Group work (about 10 minutes) Divide the whole class into four groups. Five in each one. Students cooperate and write a poem of their own group. Step 4 Students’ own poem show (10 minutes) Ask one representative from each group to show their poem and explain the poem to the whole class. Step 5 Conclusion Pets are important part of our life. They can play with us and bring us a lot of happiness. They help us to enjoy our life. Our life is full of happiness. Why not cherish our life, find the beauty of our daily life and work hard?
