M8 U3 Inventors and inventions
Teaching Plan Objectives:
After learning this lesson, students will be able to: 1.
Understand the procedures of an invention and application of a patent; 2.
Learn the words and phrases about inventors and inventions. 3.
Be aware of the cultural differences and look at them in a critical way. 4.
Conclude the qualities of inventors and write a letter to the patent office to state the reasons of applying for a patent. Important and difficult points: Conclude the qualities of inventors and write a letter to the patent office by

using the words and phrases used in the passage.
Teaching process: 1.
Leading in:
Have students review what STEAM courses are.
[Recall the concept and procedure of STEAM.]
Q1: What were you doing in the pictures?
Q2: What does STEAM stand for?
STEAM-science, technology, engineering, art, mathematics
Q3: What is the model of STEAM courses?
Model: problem-imagining-asking-planning-creating-testing-improving-sharing-reflecting-application] Q4: We can relate it to what we have learned in John Snow defeated King cholera. Do you remember the scientific procedure? Could you put the following steps in the right procedure?
Finding a problem-doing research-thinking of a creative solution-testing solution—deciding on the invention-applying for a patent Q5: Why is STEAM so popular these days?
Solve practical problems and make life more convenient.
Develop creative and critical thinking as well as cooperative ability.
Develop global competence. (Introduce the topic by reflecting on the previous experience and arouse the students’ interest; get familiar with the frequently-used vocabulary in this unit) 2.
Reading:
Have students predict what the text is mainly about by looking at the title and the three pictures. What is the problem? Q1: What is the genre of the passage
Narration Q2: Divide the passage into three parts. What is the main idea of each part?
Part 1 (P 1): role play of mother and I (pair work)
2
Mother: snakes in the courtyard
I: catch snakes but not harm them
Aim: distinguish, merciful
problem
Q3: What kind of person do you think the author is?
The writer is a helpful, brave, responsible and kind-hearted person.
(get to know the problem. Relate with the previous knowledge and stimulate the creativity to solve the problem)
Part 2(P 2-6): Think of ways to help mother (1)
Review: a new approach was clearly needed! (2)
research the habits of snakes
solution (3)
resolve: three approaches: removing the habitat; attracting them into a trap; cooling them
three attempts: improve Solution – Test – Improve
Q4: What kind of person is she? What qualities did the writer have?
Helpful, kind, brave, patient, persistent…
(pay attention to the words of expressing the feelings and conclude the characters an inventor should have)
Q5: What was the danger?
(read to know the process of solving the problem in a scientific way)
Part 3 (P7-8): Did the author stop there? No, she applied for a patent.
Why? How? What?
application
Q6: What is difference between a discovery and an invention.
Discovery: finding out something already existing in nature but not yet known. Invention: creating something not existing before.
(finish the whole scientific research and arouse the awareness of protecting the patent)
3.
Critical thinking
Q1: What do you think of the passage? Do you have any questions? Eg. 1 Is it common for parents to turn to their children for help in China? Will parents approve of the children’s action if there is danger?
3
Eg. 2 Is it the right way to release the poisonous snakes back into the wild? What other ways can you think of? (cultivate critical thinking in reading and relate to the reality) 4.
Post reading Have the students write an application letter to the patent office.
Suppose you were the writer, write an application to the patent officer to give the reasons to get your invention recognized. Please pay attention to the coherence when you are writing by using some linking words. Language should be persuasive and polite.
Version 1 Dear patent officer, I am writing to apply for the patent. Here are the reasons of my application. My approach of catching the snakes is truly novel. Totally different from the previous way of using powers to kill the snakes, I studied the habits of snakes and cooled them to make them passive. The tools I used are easy to get, only an ice-cream maker, a large bucket, and a small net. The approach is easy to carry out. Anyone can follow the example. I do hope my claim can pass all the tests and be valid to be published. Thank you for your time.
Yours,
Li Hua 5.
Conclusion
Q: What can we learn from the passage? Can you summarize what qualities an inventor should have? Keep trying. Never lose hope. Be scientific/serious. Adjust your plan. Never be stubborn. Learn from experience. Let the experts do the task. (read beyond the information) 6.
Homework In pairs look at these problems. Choose one and use the scientific stages to design a new invention to solve it. Remember to include one change to your invention in case it doesn’t work the first time. If you want, you can choose your own problem for No. 4.
4
Problem 1: The price of house is too high. Can you think of ways to design a tiny house model to help solve the problem?
Problem 2: Water is limited but a lot of water is wasted. Can you invent an equipment to recycle water? Problem 3: Ningbo is a port city. How to make full use of wind power to produce electricity? Problem 4:
