Unit 3 Tomorrow’ world
Welcome to the unit Teaching aims: 1. To make students know and discuss what people could do in the future and imagine what tomorrow’s world would be like.
2. To practice students’ oral English.
Teaching important and difficult points: How to develop students’ speaking ability by participating fully in
the discussion. Describe a future world. Teaching approaches: 1.
Pictures teaching method, tasked-based method, poetry fumigation, as well as the approaches of discussion
2.
Emphasis will be put on students’ ability of speaking, expressing and discussing. 3.
Introduce a rich variety of activities and approaches to meet different needs from the students.
4.
Make full use of the advantages of multimedia.
Interaction Patterns:
Teachers -class, individuals, pairs Teaching Aids:
multimedia and a blackboard
Procedures for teaching: Step 1 Greeting and leading-in 1. Show the posters to the students and ask them to discuss:
1). What can you see from the two pictures?
2). Why are so many people interested in science fiction stories?
Because they allow people to use their imagination and think about what
life will be like in the future. 2.
Give the brief introduction of this class, then read a related poem for the
students in order to arise their learning interest.
Step 2 Welcome to the unit. Show some pictures related with tomorrow’s world.
1.
Description: Ask students to form pairs to describe the pictures
2.
Discussion: Ask students to discuss the pictures and do the exercises Picture 1 1).What is the robot doing in this picture?
The robot is serving d____ for the master. He can do a lot of things for h_________, for example, they can help people do h_______. They will make people’s lives more c________.
2). What else can a robot do?
A robot can do a lot of repetitive (重复的) or dull things for human beings, such as doing housework; producing more high-tech products, and doing boring or dangerous work. 3). Do you think you will have a robot at home in the future?
Picture 2
1). Where are the passengers going? To the Moon, Jupiter or Mars 2). If you had a chance, would you like to fly to the Moon or another planet? What will you do when you arrive there? Yes. I want to see if there are some lives there, and bring some strange things to my families and friends.
3). Do you believe that traveling to the Moon would be just like traveling to another city?
Yes. Traveling to the Moon or to another planet might be as easy as traveling to another city. You might just have to book a ticket, get packed and think about what present you would like to bring back to your friends on the Earth.
Picture 3 1) What are the people in this picture doing? Having a birthday party. 2). How old is the man? 200 years old. 3). What do you think a 200-year-old man would look like? Do you think the man in the picture looks that old? 4). Do you think people can live that long in the future? Why or why not?
With the development of genetic research, scientists can find out the secret of living longer. In the future, human beings can live much longer than we live today. Picture 4 1). Can you tell where these “people”
are working?
In the office.
2). Can you tell who these “people”
are and what they are doing?
They are humans and aliens. They are discussing some important things. 3). What problems are the aliens and the people probably talking about?
Peace issues in the Galaxy (银河) or trade affairs between other planets and the Earth. 4). What is the relationship between them?
Workmates. Step3 Discussion Discuss the three questions listed under the four pictures from page 41 of your books.
1.
Do you think the moon could be a tourist destination in the future?
Yes. With the development of science and technology, human beings could travel wherever they want in the future. The Moon and other planets could eventually (最终)become tourist destinations.
2.
What job do you think robots could do in the future?
In my point of view, robots could do almost everything in the future. With the development of science and technology, they may be designed almost the same as humans. They could help people do boring and dangerous work. For example, it would be possible for robots to be lowered to the ocean floor and left to explore the ocean. 3. What developments in science and technology would you like to see happen in the future?
New technology seems like magic, it can do a lot of amazing things that we could never imagine before, I’d like to see that a virtual world could be created with the help of technology so that people could live in both a real world and a virtual one. We could not only play games, travel or experience excitement in the virtual world, but also we could do whatever we can do in reality.
Step4 Brainstorm Show some pictures of tomorrow’s world and ask them to think about what life will be like in the future with the help of the pictures. Step5 Consolidation Ask the students to discuss the questions. 1). Would you like to see these things happen? Why or why not? 2). Do you think robots will replace human beings in the future?
3). What things do you think robots can’t do? Step6 Group work to finish an activity. Step 7 Homework 1). Do Reading on page 110 2). Preview pages 42-43
