Teaching aims:

1. Get to learn the difference between direct speech and reported speech .

2. Learn how to change direct speech into reported speech in statements.

Teaching procedures:

Step 1

Lead-in

Show a picture and make some short dialogues with several Ss, which is used to tell students what direct and reported speech are.

Step 2

Presentation

1) Define the direct speech and reported speech

then ask students to compare the sentences in direct speech and in reported speech, and find the difference between them. Let students learn that we can change direct speech into reported speech by changing what has been said to an object clause. 2)

How to change direct speech into reported speech

1.Changes in personal pronouns and tenses. Let students learn the changes in personal pronouns and tenses.

Practice 1 Ask students to change the three sentences into reported speech.

Tip: We don’t change the tense when we report a fact that does not change over time. E.g.

‘Light travels at great speed.’ he said.→

He said that light travels at great speed.

2. Changes in adverbials of time and place Introduce to students example of changes in adverbials of time and place by means of sample sentences and the table.

Practice 2 Again, ask students to change three sentences into reported speech.

3. Changes in other cases Use the table to show some more examples of the changes that take place when we change direct speech into reported speech and also tell students some special cases.

Step 3 Exercises

Step 4 Complete the memo

Ask students to finish the Ex. on Page 9. and check the answers in class.

Step 5 Role play

Ss are asked to do a role play to consolidate the usage of direct speech and reported speech.
