Please discuss in groups to conclude the steps you use to do reading comprehension. 2.
Please finish the following reading material, discuss in groups which one is correct, and give the reason. To test the relationship between physical and psychological warmth, Bargh conducted an experiment which involved 41 college students. A research assistant who was unaware of the study’s hypotheses (假设) , handed the students either a hot cup of coffee, or a cold drink, to hold while the researcher filled out a short information form. The drink was then handed back. After that, the students were asked to rate the personality of“Person A”based on a particular description. Those who had briefly held the warm drink regarded Person A as warmer than those who had held the iced drink. 1. In Bargh’s experiment, the students were asked to________.
A. evaluate someone’s personality
B. write down their hypotheses
C. fill out a personal information form
D. hold coffee and cold drink alternatively
Step III Please finish the following three reading materials, and discuss in groups to find
the correct answers and the reasons. Meanwhile, try to analyze the strategies used. Reading material 1 …Not long ago. My wife, PJ, and I tried a new diet—not to lose a little weight but to answer an annoying question about climate change.
1. Why did the author and his wife try a new diet?
A. To take special kinds of food
B. To respond to climate change.
C. To lose weight
D. To improve their health Tip 1:
Reading material 2 Frank Hurley's pictures would be outstanding—undoubtedly first-rate photo-journalism—if they had been made last week. In fact, they were shot from 1914 through 1916,most of them after a disastrous shipwreck(海难), by a cameraman who had no reasonable expectation of survival. Many of the images were stored in an ice chest, under freezing water, in the damaged wooden ship.
33. What do we know about the photos taken by Hurley?
A. They were made last week.
B. They showed undersea sceneries.
C. They were found by a fisherman.
D. They recorded a disastrous adventure.
Tip 2:
Reading material 3 I was waiting for a phone call from my agent. He had left a message the night before, telling me that my show was to be cancelled. I called him several times, but each time his secretary told me that he was in a meeting and that he would call me later. So I waited and waited, but there was still no call. Three hours passing by, I became more and more impatient. I was certain that my agent didn’t care about my work, and he didn’t care about me. I was overcome with that thought. I started to shout at the phone,“ Let me wait, will you? Who do you think you are?”
1. Why did the author shout at the telephone?
A. His agent was mad at him.
B. He was angry with his agent.
C. He was anxious about his agent.
D. He was impatient with the secretary.
Tip 3:
Step IV Summary Step V Practice
Please finish the following exercises correctly. Exercise 1 As a third-generation native of Brownville, Texas, Mildred Garza never planned to move away. Even when her daughter and son asked her to move to San Antonio to
help with their children, she politely refused. Only after a year of friendly discussion did Ms. Garza finally say yes. That was four years ago. Today all three generations regard the move as a success, giving them a closer relationship than they would have had in separate cities. 25. Why was Garza's move a success? A. It strengthened her family ties. B. It improved her living conditions. C. It enabled her to make more friends. D. It helped her know more new places. Exercise 2 What is eBay? The simple answer is that it is a global trading platform where nearly anyone can trade practically anything. People can sell and buy all kinds of products and goods, including cars, movies and DVDs, sporting goods, travel tickets, musical instruments, clothes and shoes —
the list goes on and on.
1. We learn from the text that eBay provides people with ________.
A. a way of buying and selling goods
B. a website for them to upgrade
C. a place to exhibit their own photos D. a chance to buy things at low prices
Exercise 3 (2017,江苏卷)...Elsewhere in Asia even more astonishing actions are being taken. Chewang Norphel lives in a mountainous region in India, where he is known as the Ice Man. The loss of glaciers(冰川) there due to global warming represents an enormous threat to agriculture. Without the glaciers, water will arrive in the rivers at times when it can damage crops. Norphel’s inspiration came from seeing the waste of water over winter, when it was not needed. He directed the wasted water into shallow basins where it froze, and was stored until the spring. His fields of ice supply perfectly timed irrigation(灌溉) water.... 67. What did the Ice Man do to reduce the effect of global warming?
A. Storing ice for future use.
B. Protecting the glaciers from melting.
C. Changing the irrigation time.
D. Postponing the melting of the glaciers.
Exercise 4 When compared to running without distractions, the participants had faster application of force to their left and right legs, called loading rate, with auditory and visual distractions. They also experienced an increased amount of force from the ground on both legs, called ground reaction force, with auditory distractions. Finally, the runners tended to breathe heavier and have higher heart rates with visual and auditory distractions than without any distractions at all.
9. Based on the research, runners with auditory distractions tended to___
A. breathe heavier and have lower heart rates
B. get an increased amount of ground reaction force
C. apply more force with less oxygen consumption
D. gain a faster speed with slower loading rates
