This lesson is the second part of Unit Unit4 Pygmalion in book 8. It is an elective course for the students of grade 2 in senior high school. It plays a very important part in the English teaching of this unit. By studying it, Students can improve their reading ability. Meanwhile, they can also learn the huge diversity of races and cultures in America, especially in California.

Students have studied in senior high school for two years. They have learned enough words and sentences to read a short passage, but they are short of reading skills, so they can’t read quickly and they are still far away from our requirement.

Learn to apply the reading skills (skimming and scanning) to the reading materials after class.

Step 1 Warming up.

(10 mins) 1.

Ask the students to describe what they learn about the play.

Let some students answer the simple questions about the play. 3.

Show the students some pictures and encourage students to say what each picture is about. Step 2 Pre-reading (10 mins) 1.

Group work: look at thepassage. Write on the map the names of as many of the following as you can. Compare your names with other groups.

Find out the following plots. Step 3 Fast reading (10 mins)

Listen to the tape and find out the main idea. 2.

the main instructional aims of learning English in the high School is to cultivate students ‘abilities of listening, speaking, reading, writing and their good sense of the English language. So in this lesson I use the Situational teaching method and let the students get a better understanding of the key structure of this passage.
