Teaching Design for Period 1 Reading, Unit1 Book8 The analysis of teaching material The passage introduces the brief history about the settlement of California, to demonstrate the huge diversity of races and culture in America. Students can deeply understand its changes and development. The reading material offers students a special view to taste the multi-cultural community and arouses their cross-cultural awareness, but also helps them master relevant words and expressions.

Teaching objectives 1.

Make the students grasp the basic words, and expressions. Enable the students to apply various reading skills to understand and summarize the passage. 2.

Get the students to express their ideas combined with previous knowledge 3.

Enable them to express their viewpoints reasonably and logically through activities Teaching procedure Step 1 Warm up Show students a map of USA to arouse their interest about the topic. And then lead the topic to the specific state---California. From certain respective aspects, students can share with others their understanding about California, so as to review what they already know and introduce some topics in the reading passage.

Fast reading To develop the Ss basic reading skills and get Ss to have a good understanding of the text as well. And get the Ss to scan the passage quickly and find out the main ideas. Remind the Ss to pay attention to the first paragraph, the subtitles in the rest of the text, and the first and the last sentence of each paragraph and then help them infer the arrangement and framework of the passage. Detailed reading To grasp the details of the text so that they can have a good understanding of each group of settlers and talk about the important events in California history.

Divide the text into four parts to get four groups of students to read carefully about respective parts, and then call one representative from each group to finish the exercises. 2.

Role play Connected with the group work in the detailed reading, role play helps them pave a solid foundation of what they understand, train them to reorganize the given language and improve teamwork spirit as well.
