Teaching material

The teaching material is from "The Proposal" from Pride and Prejudice.

The writer of the Pride and Prejudice is Jane Austen who was a great woman writer. She produced six completed novels, all of which deal with the problems and limitations of women's choices. At this time the only respectable career for a woman was to marry, so the dilemma of her heroines' was also to marry but for love. In the story of the Pride and Prejudice, we follow the lives of five sisters as they overcome obstacles to their happiness and

marriage until all is happily resolved. The marriage between Darcy and Elizabeth reveals the characteristics which constitutes a successful marriage. One of these characteristics is that the feeling can't be brought on by appearances, and must gradually develop between the two people as they get to know one anther.

Background of the teaching material:

Elizabeth Bennet met and disliked Mr Darcy, a rich and handsome landowner, almost at once for his proud ways and rude manners. When she meets him a second time at his aunt's house, she is astonished when he proposes marriage to her. 

Teaching object

Students having this class are senior students in high school. They have

learnt English for years, so they can do some reading based on the words, phrases and grammars they have learnt in high school. Besides, they are interested in English literature and students have seen the film named the Pride and Prejudice. It is high time for them to read and appreciate this part of the novel. 

Teaching aims Train the ability of appreciating the literary. Learn to enjoy the stories. Learn to analyze the plot. 

Teaching Procedures Step I: Lead-in Show the first sentence of the novel: Everyone knows that a single man with a fortune must be in want of a wife. 1

Discuss in group : What's the sentence imply? What will the author deliver in the novel? Reference: As readers, we know that the sentence is not really true, but it represents the

opinions of all mothers who have daughters to marry. It is making fun of those mothers

whose only wish is to marry their daughters well. Today we are going to read the part of it. Step II: Fast reading Skim the text quickly and answer these questions: 1. Why did Elizabeth refuse Mr. Darcy? 2. Why was Mr. Darcy sure that she would accept him? Step III: Careful reading Read the text carefully and do the following exercises. 1.

Fill in the chart below Reasons for marrying Mr. Darcy Reasons against marrying Mr. Darcy 1 1 2 2 3 3 4 4 2. What do you think Mr. Bennet's opinion would be? 3. Do you agree with Elizabeth's decision? Why? Step IV: Work in groups 1.

Enjoy part of the movie Pride and Prejudice and discuss “what’s wrong between Elizabeth and Darcy?”

Supposing that Darcy can do well in communicating, make a dialogue between Elizabeth and Darcy to explain the mistakes between them. 2
