Teaching goals 1.Knowledge and skills

1).To help them master the words and phrases:

Compare, variety, international, belong to, in favour of, refer to…as etc.

2).Master the sentence patterns and use them freely.

3).Learn how to compare 2 things.

4).Write three more paragraphs about the Chinese language.

2.Process and methods

1)Train the students’ speaking ability through individual, pair work and group work.

2)Train the students’ reading skills by dealing with some reading activities.

3)Train the students’ writing skills by writing three more paragraphs about Chinese. 4)Explanations to make the students master some language points. 3.Emotion and values

Help the students understand the difference between the three kinds of English Teaching important points:

1.Enable students to gain some more knowledge about British, American and World English, know something about these three kinds of English.

2.Discuss the Chinese and write three more paragraphs.

Teaching difficult point:

1.Discuss which English is the best variety to learn.

2.Write three more paragraphs about the Chinese language.

Teaching procedure:

Part 1 Speaking

Step 1: Lead-in (Introduction)

1. Do Activity 1

1) Q: In the text, we have learned that there are many “Englishes”, not just two main varieties. For example, British, American, Australian, and even Spanish English. We can say the Australian and Spanish English as World English. Now we will discuss these varieties and decide which is the best varieties to learn.

Step 2:

1) List the words which can be used in this topic..

2). Students may make some sentences about this topic using the words.

3). Translate some sentences which are all about this topic.

Give them some suggestions, thus they will form a passage.

4). Ask and answer the questions about the passage. Step 3: Group work

Divide the whole class into three groups. Group one: in favour of British English.

Group two: in favour of American English.

Group three: in favour of World English.

Discuss and then say your reasons out.

Step 4:Now vote for the variety of English you think is best to learn.

Part 2 Writing

Step1: Activity 3

Read and choose the best title for the paragraph.

Step2:Introduction about the information about Chinese.

汉语的书写体系

汉语的书写系统目前有繁体和简体两种。前者用于台湾、港澳和北美华人圈中，后者用于中国大陆和新加坡以及东南亚的华人社区。通常来说，两种汉字书写体系虽然有差异，但并不影响沟通。汉字有5万多，但大多数人只认识其中大概2万多。我们目前多使用普通话，普通话被认为是一种更加正式的语言，使用于庄重的场合，是政府工作用语和学校教学用语。

汉语的种类

主要有八大语系。这些是有地域性的，称为方言，彼此在发音方面的差异非常大。还有一种划分方法是分为两大类：文言文和白话文。五四运动之前所使用的书面语叫作“文言”，是一种以孔子时代所使用的以“雅言”为基础的书面语。五四运动之后所推崇的书面汉语通常被称为“白话”，即以北方话为基础的现在书面语。在现代汉语的书面语中，文言已经很少使用了。

汉语的今天

1958年入学的儿童学习汉语拼音，目的在于帮助每个人学会使用普通话，学会汉字。50年代时期，提出了简化字。作为文化的载体，未来汉字的发展，可能是任何人也难以预料的。

There are about 50,000 characters in written Chinese, however, most people only know about 20,000 of these. Most of these characters have elements of meaning and information about pronunciation.The most widely used system of writing is putonghua, which become the medium of instruction in all schools in 1956, and almost all publications made are using it.

Varieties of Chinese

There are 8 main varieties of Chinese.These are regional, and are often called dialects, although they are different from each other in pronunciation. There is also another classification: Wenyan and Baihua. Putonghua, which is closely similar to the language spoken in Beijing, has developed since the late of 1950s. Its development has had the aim of simplifying Chinese.

The Language Today

Pinyin is a 58-symbol writing system which has been used since 1958. it has the aims of helping everyone to use putonghua, and to learn the Chinese characters.
