Unit 1 Advertising Welcome to the unit

Teaching Aims: 

To make students aware of the role of advertising in our daily life 

Guide students to talk about different ads, including commercial ads and PSAs(public service ads).



To discuss the four pictures to improve their speaking ability

Teaching Procedure:

Step One: Lead-in T: (Greeting the class as usual) Now we will show you a video. Now,can you tell me what are they? T can give the students enough time to discuss the questions in pairs or groups. Any related answers are acceptable. This step is just to arouse their interest in the topic.)

Step Two: What is an advertisement?

T: Now,I will show you some pictures. Then you should tell them which types they are.

Do the two groups of pictures belong to the same type of ads? 1. Which advertisements make you want to buy a product or service? Why?

2. Which advertisements make you think about social problems? Why? 3. Do you believe that advertisements tell the complete truth? Why or why not?

(T can help the students to conduct the activity and encourage them to work together to complete the task. Later let some students to show off.)

Let’s do a summary of what is an advertisement?

An advertisement uses words and pictures to persuade people to buy product or service,or believe in an idea. There are two main type of advertisements——

commercial ads and public service ads. Step Three: Advertisements are everywhere

T: In fact, we are living in a world of ads and whether you like or not, they are influencing our life. Now,I’ll show you some pictures. Then,you should tell me where they are.

Next,please discuss them in groups of four and try to answer me where they are. Show the pictures in pairs and let the students to discuss them one by one. (Remember to give them enough time to think about ) Step Four: Advertisements Show

From the poster, we can see an airplane. It uses “I love to fly with Oxlin Airlines”

to attract people.

This poster persuade us to choose the Oxlin Airlines service.

Poster 2

This poster show us that all the trees have been cut down. So, the birds have

nowhere else to build their nests.It sends us a serious warning and tells us that we should protect our environment from now on.

Poster3 From the poster, we can see the sentence “Say ‘No’

to drugs!”

This poster tells us that taking drug is harmful. So, we must fight against drugs.

Poster4 The ad uses words “Shine that lasts for days”

to attract.

It persuades young people to buy this shampoo. This poster is targeting young people, especially girls, because they always pay more attention to their appearance. T: Well done! Now you can see that advertisements are a good way to sell products or services. They are also a good way to make people aware of the needs of others and the dangers around them.
