【教学目标】

By the end of this lesson, students should be able to: 1.

Get some ideas of the two main types of advertisements and their respective purposes (Commercial ads & PSAs); 2.

Express their own ideas on the topic of ‘Whether advertisements tell the complete truth’; 3.

Raise environmental awareness through discussing PSA.

Two main types of advertisements & their respective purposes

【教学难点】

Students might feel it difficult to express their own ideas on advertisements. Therefore, the teacher could provide them more hints. 【教学方法】

Step 1: Leading in 1.

Teacher asks ‘Do you know what the logo stands for?’

while presenting two pictures and slogans. 2.

Then the teacher continues ‘What do we call them?’. While students answer the question, the teacher writes ‘Advertisement’ on the blackboard.

Step 2: Presentation 1.

Teacher shows a question on PPT, following the previous step.

‘Where can we find advertisement?’

Invite one or two students to answer it. Write the answers on the blackboard and then make a conclusion after showing pictures with answers. 3.

Teacher has students underline answers on p1 after putting forward the question.

‘What is an advertisement?’

Step 3: Activity 1-picture talking 1.

Divide students into groups of two. The students in the same row are responsible for the same picture. Have them complete the information on each picture by filling the blank. Sample: I can see __________ in the picture. The ad tries to sell __________ . If we use the product, we will __________ . It tries to make / remind us __________.

After 5 minutes, invite four groups to share the information. 3.

Then, have students conclude the two types that these ads can be divided into. Commercial advertisements (CAs) Public service advertisements (PSAs)

Step 4: Practice-Does it CA or PSA? 1.

Teacher presents six pictures or videos, asking students to classify and translate. --The pictures are so obvious that the students can easily tell. This will help them be familiar with the two terminologies.

Step 5: Activity 2-Guessing 1.

Teacher presents five pictures and asks students to guess ‘What the ads are advertising?’ Invite students to name the person who will answer the question. 2.

Then make a classification of these pictures.

Step 6: Consolidation 1.

Teacher makes a comparison between CA and PSA from three aspects after inviting students to answer ‘What is the purpose of CA? PSA?’

‘What are their characteristics?’

Comparison: CA: 1) To encourage people to buy products / services 2)

Make money 3)

Sometimes cheat people PSA: 1) To educate people about health, safety, or other social problems 2)

Serve the public 3)

They are usually true and free.

Step 7: Activity 3-Discussion 1.

Have students discuss the questions given in groups of four. (They can choose anyone of them.) 2.

Then invite two or three students to share their ideas. Hints: persuasive words; striking pictures; cut down; nest; protect the environment; aim to; deceive / mislead; keep hair shiny; make sb. aware of sth.

Assignment 1.

Look for more interesting ads or the best PSA you’ve ever seen and show them next time. 2.

Design an attractive advertisement by yourself.

【教学反思】

本节课设计的教学活动丰富，但在具体的教学过程中，对于如何判断Commercial advertisement和public service advertisement学生虽然能区别，但是不能说出深层次的含义，尤其是PSA想要传达的概念，学生们并不能完全体会。在讨论环节，由于词汇量的限制，学生们难以发散思维，将想法表达出来，因此在之后的教学中可以给出关键词，以帮助学生解决问题。
