Making a speech about sport

Teaching Aims: 1. Get students to know more about different kinds of sports by reading two articles . 2. Encourage students to make a speech about sports through group work to improve students’

reading and speaking abilities. 3. Instruct the students to learn and appreciate the spirit of sports.

Teaching Important and Difficult Points: How to lead students to make a speech about our school sports events and the spirit of sports through cooperation.

Teaching Methods: 1. Opening teaching 2. Task-based language teaching 3. Interest-inspiring teaching

Teaching procedures:

Step I

Lead –in and revision 1. Show a short video about playing Taichi, and have a free talk about it. 2. Have a revision about modal verbs and sports events by making some sentences according to the pictures that the teacher shows. 3. Show students two pictures about sports items, and ask them whether they are Olympic events or not. Step II

Reading passage one Activity1: Reading and answering (Part1) Ask one of the students to read the first part and ask one question. Q: What requirements must be met before a sports event can be considered by the IOC? Activity2: Listening (Part2&3) Listen to part 2& 3 to pick out sports events mentioned in these two parts and tell the reasons why they are in or out .

Activity3: Reading and answering (part4)

Ask students to read this part together by answering a question. Q: Which sports event is still trying to get into the Olympics? Why hasn’t it been approved by the IOC?

Activity4: Free talk

Q: Is it possible for Wushu to enter into the Olympics in the future? Step III Reading passage two 1.

Ask students to read this passage as quickly as possible. Pay more attention to the teams and matches mentioned in this story. 2.

Have a deep understanding of this story. Step IV Making a speech about sports ----- sports events in our school 1. Show a video about sports events in No.1 Middle School of Changde. 2. Give tips for making a speech of our school sports events. 3. Divide the whole class into several groups and ask them to make a speech about their school sports events which are in or out . 4. Present their speech. Step V Summary Show a video about some famous sports stars and ask students to learn the spirit of each player. Step VI Homework

Ask students to write an article on sports events which are in or out in the Olympics.
