Module 4 A Social Survey – My Neighbourhood Listening and Vocabulary, Everyday English, Grammar 2 Goals: 1. Review the present perfect tense.

2. Enable Ss to know some skills of listening.

3. To study some daily expressions.

4. To learn how to pronounce words stressed in sentences. Teaching procedures: Step 1 Revision Check the answers to the WORKBOOK exercises of Grammar. Step 2 Vocabulary Purpose: To get Ss to know some new words 1. (Group Work) Ask Ss to look at the picture and guess who they are.

2. (Group Work) Let Ss discuss the following questions.

(1) What do you know about the neighborhood committee?

(2) How have they helped people?

(3) Would you like to be on the committee when you are older? 3. (Pair Work) Ask them to guess the meaning of the words in Activity 1 on page 35 with each other.

Step 3 Listening Purpose: To get the main information in the listening part;

To develop Ss’ listening ability.

1. Pre-listening: (Pair Work) Ask them to predict what the passage is about. 2. While-listening: (Individual Work)

(1) Listen to the interview and check your answers. Suggested answers: The passage is about a neighborhood group.

(2) Listen to part 2 and complete the chart. Step 4 Everyday English Purpose: To let Ss know some useful expressions. 1. (Individual Work)

Ask Ss to read what they have filled in just now. And then ask them to finish the Everyday English exercises on page 38. Suggested answers: (1) a (2) a (3) a (4) a (5) a (6) b (7) b 2. (Pair Work) Ask Ss to use the phrases to make sentences. Step 5 Pronunciation – Stressed Words in sentences Purpose: Enable Ss to know how to read the stressed word in sentences. 1. (Individual Work) Pre-pronunciation: Ask Ss to think of what they have learnt in last module. According to their notes, try to underline the stressed words in each sentence in Pronunciation section.

2. (Pair Work) Pronunciation

(1) Listen and check the answers. Suggested answers: stressed words: Yang, aren’t, all, life, right, I was, in this, Really, work, organization, neighborhood committee,worked, for years, interesting

(2) Read the sentences after the tape.

(3) Read the extract with a partner to see who is better. Step 6 Grammar 2 Purpose: Let Ss to distinguish verbs that can last and that cannot last. 1. (Pair Work) Ask Ss to look at some sentences on the screen. Decide which sentences describe events that continue over a period of time and which sentences describe events that happen at a particular point in time.

send 3. (Pair Work) Ask them how to distinguish the words. Suggested answers: 在现在完成时态中，非延续性动词不能和表示延续概念的“for + 一段时间”的时间状语连用。

(The three phrases all have the same meaning. Their meaning is “到目前为止”.)

Work in pairs. Ask and answer about what you have learnt so far / up to now, this term, in your lessons at school. Step 7 Homework 1. Finish Workbook Vocabulary Exercises on page 86-87. 2. Work in groups. Contact your neighborhood committee to do a social survey. You can make a list of the information you want. The listening passage chart will help you .
