There is often some difficulty in knowing how to analyze drama. One major

1

lies in the fact that drama exists in two different worlds: it exists on the page, as written words, but it also exists in the world of theatre, as individual one-time-only performances interpreted and presented by actors. Theatre

2

must often face this dilemma when reviewing a play. Sometimes a play is truly an excellent piece of literature, but it is badly performed.

3

a rather badly written play can be a great work of art when it is performed by excellent actors and actresses. This complex relationship between a written drama and its performance often makes it difficult to decide

4

a play is a great work of art or not. Another difficulty is in whether to analyze drama according to its fictional elements or poetic elements. Drama is not entirely a work of fiction,

5

fiction is written only to be read, not performed. Drama, however, does have many of the elements of good fiction,

6

characters and plot, and therefore can be analyzed according to the quality of its fictional elements. But drama has many elements of poetry as well: rhythm, sound patterns, grammar, and beautiful language used

Drama, however, has a unique feature that places it apart 9. _____ the worlds of prose, performance, fiction and poetry. Drama, unlike all those other genres, excels at the presentation of verbal interaction. Its characters and 10. ______ relationships are all developed through speech. Conversations move the action along, or, as in Shakespeare, soliloquies (独白),in which characters speak what they are thinking while they are alone. Dramas rarely have a narrator,

11. ______ (like) in works of fiction. One of the best ways, therefore, 12. ______ analyze the beauty and power of a play is to look at the play’s conversations, and what the verbal interactions (言语互动) show about the actions of the characters. The exchange of words can reveal many things indirectly: the class or position of the characters, their emotions, 13. ______ the characters think of themselves or of others, and much more. In analyzing drama, however, we must not 14. ______ to enjoy the play. A story by Rudyard Kipling, Part I (adapted)

In the beginning of years, when the world was so new and all, and the Animals were just beginning to work for Man, there was a Camel, and he lived in the middle of a desert because he did not want to work. So he ate sticks and thorns and tamarisks and milkweed and prickles, most painfully lazy; and when anybody spoke to him he said “Humph!” Just “Humph!” and no more.

Presently the Horse came to him on Monday morning, with a saddle (马鞍) on his back and a bit in his mouth, and said, “Camel, O Camel, come out and trot like the rest of us.”

“Humph!” said the Camel; and the Horse went away and told the Man.

Presently the Dog came to him, with a stick in his mouth, and said, “Camel, O Camel, come and fetch and carry like the rest of us.”

“Humph!” said the Camel; and the Dog went away and told the Man.

Presently the Ox came to him, with the yoke on his neck and said, “Camel, O Camel, come and plough like the rest of us.”

“Humph!” said the Camel; and the Ox went away and told the Man. At the end of the day the Man called the Horse and the Dog and the Ox together, and said, “Three, O Three, I’m very sorry for you (with the world so new-and-all); but that Humph-thing in the Desert can’t work, or he would have been here by now, so I am going to leave him alone, and you must work double-time to make up for it.”

That made the Three very angry (with the world so new-and-all), and they held a discussion, and a gathering, and a meeting, and a conference on the edge of the Desert; and the Camel came chewing on milkweed most painfully lazy, and laughed at them. Then he said “Humph!” and went away again. Presently there came along the Djinn in charge of All Deserts, and he stopped to discuss and talk with the Three. “Djinn of All Deserts,” said the Horse, “is it right for anyone to be lazy, with the world so new-and-all?”

“Certainly not,” said the Djinn.

“Well,” said the Horse, “there’s a thing in the middle of your Desert with a long neck and long legs, and he hasn’t done a stroke of work since Monday morning. He won’t trot.”

“Whew!” said the Djinn, whistling, “that’s my Camel! What does he say about it?”

“He says ‘Humph!’”

said the Dog, “and he won’t fetch and carry.”

“Does he say anything else?”

“Only ‘Humph!’; and he won’t

plough,” said the Ox.

“Very good,” said the Djinn. “I’ll humph him if you will kindly wait a minute.”

1. The Camel said “Humph!” to the Three ________. A. simply to refuse to work

B. not knowing how to trot C. not knowing how to fetch and carry

D. not knowing how to plough 第

From what they told the Djinn about the Camel, we can guess that the Three felt quite _______. A. comfortable with the Camel

B. pleased with the Camel C. satisfied with the Camel

D. annoyed with the Camel (B)

A story by Rudyard Kipling, Part II (adapted)

The Djinn continued across the desert, and found the Camel most painfully lazy, looking at his own reflection in a pool of water. “My long and bubbling friend,” said the Djinn, “what’s this I hear of your doing no work, with the world so new-and-all?”

“Humph!” said the Camel.

The Djinn sat down, with his chin in his hand, and began to think, while the Camel looked at his own reflection in the pool of water. “You’ve given the Three extra work ever since Monday morning, all on account of your painful laziness,” said the Djinn; and he went on thinking, with his chin in his hand. “Humph!” said the Camel.

“I shouldn’t say that again if I were you,” said the Djinn. “You might say it once too often. Camel, I want you to work.”

And the Camel said “Humph!” again; but no sooner had he said it than he saw his back, which he was so proud of, puffing up and up into a great big lolloping humph. “Do you see that?” said the Djinn. “That’s your very own humph that you’ve brought upon your very own self by not working. Today is Thursday, and you’ve done no work since Monday when the work began. Now you are going to work.”

“How can I,” said the Camel, “with this humph on my back?”

“I made that for a purpose,” said the Djinn, “all because you missed those three days. You 第

will be able to work now for three days without eating because you can live on your humph; and don’t you ever say I never did anything for you? Come out of the Desert and go to the Three, and behave. Humph yourself!”

And the Camel humphed himself, humph and all, and went away to join the Three. And from that day to this the Camel always wears a humph (we call it ‘hump’ now, not to hurt his feelings); but he has never yet caught up with the three days that he missed at the beginning of the world, and he has never yet learned how to behave. 4. D. “You’ve given the Three extra work ever since Monday morning.”

5. What the Djinn did was trying to ________. A. give the Camel a lesson B. make fun of the Camel C. disappoint the Camel D. amuse the Camel 6. The writer repeats “with the world so new-and-all” five times to suggest that ________. A. the story happened a long time ago B. no one had the right to be lazy at such a time C. the Three were very hard-working animals D. Man needed great help from animals at such a time

7. Which of the following might be a good title for the story? A. Don’t Be Painfully Lazy

B. The Horse, the Dog, the Ox and the Camel C. How the Camel Got His Hump D. The World So New-and-All

听第1~5段对话,分别完成1~5题

Text 1 M: Of all the kinds of literature, I like plays the most. W: Do you? I like novels more than plays. M: Well, reading plays is more interesting than reading novels, in my opinion. W: Maybe you’re right there. Text 2 M: I went to watch Shakespeare’s play King Lear last night. W: Really? I don’t really care for that play. I prefer plays with happy endings.

M: Oh, so I guess you would like comedies. W: Yes, because a comedy encourages laughter, not tears. Text 3 M: Have you heard of the dramas from the Chinese Yuan Dynasty? W: You mean Chinese Yuan Zaju? Dramas set to music? M: Right. Singing was the most important means of expression in Yuan Zaju. W: Well, that is a unique creation of the arts. Text 4 M: Do you know when drama flourished in England? W: Oh, yes, that was at the end of Queen Elizabeth I’s time.

M: Good for you! Do you know one of the most outstanding drama writers of that time? W: Of course! Shakespeare!

Text 5 M: Some dramatists focus on a certain thought or theme in their plays. W: Yes, that’s right! I remember George Bernard Shaw of Britain often did that in his plays. M: But other dramatists like to focus on a character or a relationship between characters in their plays. W: Well, that gives us great variety in drama to enjoy. 第

W: No, I don’t mean opera — I mean spoken theatre. In Chinese we call it huaju. M: Ah, I don’t know if I like it or not! I don’t know anything about Chinese plays!

W: I didn’t either, actually, until last week. My parents and I went to see a play by the modern Chinese playwright Lao She. M: How’d you like it?

W: You know, I didn’t think I would enjoy it at all, but I found it really interesting! I really want to see more Chinese spoken theatre now. 6. C 7. A 听第7段对话,完成8~11题

is showing tonight in the school auditorium? I’ve wanted to see it for a long time. Do you want to go? I’ve got two tickets.

W: Oh, wow! I’ve been longing to see it too. I love anything by Shakespeare. He was a true playwright. M: Yes, he really was. Both his tragedies and his comedies are excellent. Not many playwrights can produce both kinds well. W: Is Romeo and Juliet one of his four tragedies? M: I don’t think so. His four great tragedies are Hamlet, King Lear, Macbeth

and Othello. But Romeo and Juliet is certainly a real tragedy. W: What a great memory! 第

M: Thanks! We just studied that in my English literature class. By the way, have you ever read the play? W: Well, I’ve read a simple version of the play, not Shakespeare’s original version. It’s a

real tragedy. I think the plot is quite complicated but is very well-planned. The ending makes me cry. But I have to say ... I like comedies better because tragedies always make me feel frustrated and miserable. M: I know what you mean. But tragedies always make us think more deeply about life than comedies. I think you’ll find the play is really moving.

W: Yes, I’m sure I will. So, when will the play begin?

M: At six o’clock. I’ll wait for you at the gate of the auditorium at ten to six.

W: Great! Thanks so much for inviting me. See you then. M: See you. 8. B

Text 8 Cao Yu was born in 1910 in the province of Hubei under the name Wan Jiabao. He grew up in Tianjin, where his mother often took him to see Western-style plays. That gave him a great interest in theatre, and so, when he attended high school, he took part in many high school plays. He attended university first in Tianjin, but later transferred to Qinghua University. His studies there greatly influenced his writings, as was first seen in his first play, The Thunderstorm, which he finished writing in his last year at university, in 1934. Cao Yu wrote and directed a total of about ten plays. His writing and his later position as the director of the Beijing People’s Art Theatre greatly influenced the development of modern Chinese theatre. He pushed theatre in China to develop beyond the traditional, and to focus on examining modern-day issues. The horse, the dog and the ox all went to ask the camel to work, but the camel only said, “Humph,” and continued to eat. Even the Man could do nothing about it. As a result, the three animals all had to work harder to make up for the camel’s laziness. The Djinn came by and heard the news, so he went to solve the problem. He told the camel to work, but the camel only said, “Humph!” and paid no attention to him. The Djinn decided to teach the camel a lesson and made him behave himself. So he made a great hump grow on the camel’s back. The Djinn told the camel that the hump would make it possible for it to work for three extra days, since he had been so lazy for three days at the beginning of the world. That really taught the camel a good lesson. 第
