Unit 4 Pygmalion Using Language Reading, Listening and Speaking 教材分析
This unit is a shortened version of the play Pygmalion written by George Bernard Shaw. The play takes place in 1914 just before the war between UK, France and Germany. So it was written at a time when social classes were fixed, and it was extremely difficult to move from one social class to another.
In Shaw’s play, Professor Higgins is a man who does like women either and is very rude to them. For a bet, he agrees to teach a poor young woman (Eliza) so that she can be passed off as a rich lady in high class society. The reading part is the starting of the play----making the acquaintance. And the aim of ACT 2, SCENE 1 is to continue the second act of the play in which Pickering makes a bet with Henry. If Henry can turn Eliza into a lady in three months, Pickering will consider Henry the greatest teacher alive, and he also agrees to pay all the costs himself. After reading, a listening and speaking test are designed for students, whose main content involve how Eliza behaves in the training process and how she is treated by Higgins and Pickering and even by the servant in Higgins’
house respectively. Thus, it is also of great necessity to figure out Eliza’s feelings after being treated harshly. Based on this, students are encouraged to make assumptions on the characteristics of each character in the play, which is often considered the essence of a play. 学生分析
The targets students are from the top classes of Liberal Arts, which means that most of them have an superb command of English language.
