Teaching Topic:

“Inventors and inventions ” in Unit 3

Teaching Type: Listening and speaking

Teaching Aims: 1 Help the students know more about Inventors and inventions. 2 To help the students improve their listening skills ,such as listening for detailed information. 3 To help the students improve their communicative ability and develop their sense of cooperation and teamwork by group discussion and group writing. 4 To cultivate the students’ creativity and imagination by designing their own inventions and expressing their ideas Teaching important points:

Apply the knowledge they have learned to the practical situation and improve their speaking ability. Teaching Difficult Points: 1 how to listen effectively for detailed information 2 How to work cooperatively in groups to make an advertisement Teaching Method: task-based teaching and learning; cooperative learning; discussion ;performance Teaching Aids: PPT, handout materials ,some inventions.

Teaching Procedure: Step I: Leading-in

Show the students a video and some inventions which have special functions to draw the students’ attention to the topic ;arouse the students’ interest in inventions. StepII: Warming up Have a competition to inspire their enthusiasm and know briefly about inventions and inventors . 1 inventors and inventions 2 guessing game (listen to the teacher carefully and guess what it is) StepIII: Distinguish invention and discovery Define invention and discovery by giving examples and distinguish the different meaning of them. StepIV:

Listening

Pre-listening choose a machine you use every day and think about what you would do to improve it. Would you change the shape ,the size or the motor? Discuss and tell the class. While-listening 1 Listen to the tape and tick the words you hear. 2 Listen again and make notes on James Dyson’s invention StepV: Speaking activities Homework checking

(design your own invention and write an advertisement for it) let the students work in groups of 4, discuss and design their own inventions to

solve the problems we are facing in every field. They need to fill in the file of their invention and draw a picture if possible. Speaking

Suppose you are an inventor and you are working for a company. It is your job to suggest new ways of developing products. Some students will report their inventions and the others who act as the leaders of the company or the customers may ask some questions

Practice listening and speaking , thinking creatively and working cooperatively in designing inventions and making an advertisement;

StepVII: Assignment

Write a composition about a new invention with five sentences
