The analysis of teaching materials

The theme of Module 4 is about modern life , which is closely related to everybody . No matter who you are , you can’t avoid modern life , let alone students, especially this topic : sport , which plays a very important part in students’ lives and students are very familiar with it . So students can have something to say and will not feel strange about this topic , which can arouse students’

interest in studying English . What’s more ,this topic can make students love and do more sports after class, not just only putting all their hears into study.

Unit 2 just deals with the topic of sport to make students aware of the importance of being healthy and the benefits of sport and during sports, friendship is more important than winning. In this project , there are two passages : one introduces some background information about sport: how to enter the Olympics for a sport , which can help students have a general idea of this knowledge and can motivate some students’

enthusiasm who are good at sport to do more for Chinese more events to enter the Olympics in the future

; and the second passage is just to show : in a sport competition, winning is not the most important thing , but friendship and respect , which can help students to have positive attitudes when facing losing and winning matches . The analysis of students’ learning situations Senior High one students will study this project . Since they have studied in senior high school for almost one year and most of them are accustomed to the senior high school life .They have already been familiar with the teacher and classmates, but because of the poor foundation of English knowledge , most of them in this class are not good at speaking in English , who are afraid to be laughed at and don’t have much confidence in themselves. So how to make them express before the whole class confidently is a big problem. According to this situation, the speed in this class will be a little bit slower and simple words and phrases will be used more often. Learning aims

1. Through the study of this project：

（1）students can know the basic information about how to enter a sport into the Olympics

（2）students can have this knowledge in mind: winning is not everything in sport. （3）students can make a speech about sport in a group. 2.

Through the study of this project:

（1）students can put their learning strategies into practice :skimming and scanning.

（2）students can find appropriate ways to talk , share and how to work together effectively. 3.

Through the study of this project:

（1）students can develop their ability to cooperate with others and have the sense of team spirit . （2）students can be more confident when expressing in English through encouragement and

cooperation.

Teaching important and difficult points 1.How to help students raise their voices loudly and overcome their shyness when speaking English in front of the whole class.

2. How to help those whose knowledge foundation is very weak to join in the group discussion. Teaching procedures : Step 1: Lead-in

Watch a video about the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games : the theme song---You and Me Ask students to follow the song and sing together .Then ask a question: Do you know how many gold medals the Chinese athletes won in the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing? If students can’t answer , just show the answer: 51 gold medals. Then show the names of the athletes who won the gold medals and ask students whether they know in which event they won .

After completing the blanks, the teacher will say it is not easy for these athletes to have win in these events. Then

another question will be raised : Do you know how a sport enters the Olympics? [Explanation] Using the video can arouse students’

interest in this class and also this song is familiar to them , so students will fell so happy and relaxed .The blanks and questions are good ways to directly introduce the first passage, making the transition so naturally and smoothly. Step 2 :Some background information about the Olympics Passage 1: 一、Requirements for a sport to enter the Olympics: 1.have its own international _______; 2. e.g. 1. tae kown do: added in 2000 2. rugby ; golf : added in 2016 Sports trying : Chinese wushu [Explanation] In this part , use blanks for students to fill in, which is not very difficult for students to find the answers in the text quickly in order to raise students’ spirits in this class . What’s more , this part can help students to raise their confidence in participating in the class and prepare their hearts for the following activities. Step 3: The study of Passage 2 Questions: Fill in the blanks ：

After filling the two questions , teacher will remind: There are two kinds of reactions after losing the match about the team Eagles and the team Kangaroos.Then a question (group work) will be shown ： Is winning everything? Discussion: Is winning everything and then students share their opinions before the whole class. [Explanation] Use questions and blanks to have a quick look at this passage, which also can make students find answers quickly and most of the students can keep up with the teaching speed of the class . The blanks just help students to know the different reactions of the two teams who lost : the team Eagles and the team Kangaroos . Then teacher reminds the students of this difference and ask students a question: Whether winning is everything or not , so let students have a group discussion , which functions as a preparation for the writing . Step 4 ： Sentences to appreciate and make a speech about sport

1.Work in small groups. 2.Choose a topic about sport together 3. Group members: discuss, share opinions 4. One member : write down other's opinions

[Explanation] some sentences for students to appreciate are designed to help students in their making the speech. Students can use these sentences to polish their speech and make their speech more wonderful . About making a speech about sport, students will still do this job in a group and they must choose a topic together, discuss with group members, share their ideas, gather information, write the ideas and then present. Because students have some ideas about sport in the above discussion part, making a speech shouldn’t be difficult for them .

Teaching Reflection The whole teaching procedures were simple ,like using simple words ,phases and even simple spoken English,

which can help students to understand the teacher’s instructions and participate in the class so easily ； also , the whole class atmosphere was very relaxing and friendly, which can make students bravely speak out their opinions but fear no laughter ; the whole teaching style was natural and smooth, which can increase the effectiveness of teaching and learning . Of course , there are still some points which can be improved later in my teaching , for example , how to help students with poor English answer questions bravely .It’s ok to make mistakes, but how to make them confidently voice their opinions is another questions, which deserves thinking deeply.
