Extend Reading: Finding a balance: My t’ai chi experience

Learning objectives:

By the end of the lessons, students will be able to:

1. Understand the author’s experience in practicing T’ai chi;

2. Get a better understanding of T’ai chi;

3. Know how to describe one’s experience in detail;

4. Become interested in spreading Chinese culture.

Teaching procedure:

Step 1: Lead-in (3-5 mins) Please choose one thing that you want the world to know about China.

What is it and why?

Step 2: Pre-reading (5 mins) 1. What do you already know about T’ai chi?

2. What do you want to know about T’ai chi?

Step 3: While-reading (10 mins) 1. Read the passage by yourself, and see if you can find the answers to your questions.

2. Summarize the author’s experience in practicing T’ai chi.

3. Analyze the structure of the passage.

Step 4: Post-reading – Share your experience (15 mins) 1. A new passage related to the topic of T’ai chi will be presented to students.

Students are required to read the passage by themselves first and work in a group later.

2. Summarize the main idea of each passage according to the questions.

3. Task:

Students take on a new role and share his/her experience of T’ai chi according to the information they get from the articles.

Based on the structure of the original passage and write about the experience of T’ai chi with a new identity.

Possible roles according to the passage:

A young T’ai chi master who teaches T’aichi online;

An old woman who has practiced and taught T’ai chi for a long time;

A patient who participated in the research;

A visitor who visited Chenjianggou, the birthplace of T’ai chi.
