Analysis of the learners:
The students in Class 2 have learned a certain number of words. They can express themselves with simple words, phraseds and sentence patterns. For example, they often employ “you should…, you’d better…, do…, don’t do…”when offering advice. But what they lack in the letter of advice are some advanced sentence patterns which can beautify their composition. Besides, they lack the
awareness of offering certain reasons to make their advice more acceptable. As a result, their letters of advice often appear dull and inpersuasive.
Teaching procesure: Step I
Greeting and leading in ( 5 minutes) T: What do you think of your English teacher? Do you think I am energetic? What do you think I should do to be energetic? Purpose: arouse the students’
interest at the beginning of the class and get the students exposed to some high frequency words (refresh, relieve stress, enrich…) in the process of offering advice.
Step II Presentation and compare
(
5
minutes) T: You have given me many good suggestions. Can you put them into a letter? A friend of mine wrote me a letter. Do you think it is good enough? S: No. too short. Too simple. T: Another friend of mine wrote me another letter. Do you think it is better?
Tips: give the students some time to enjoy the second composition. It is obvious the second one is much better than the first one. Purpose: present two compositions to the students to give them a chance to see the difference between the good and bad composition.
Step III
Explore (
8
minutes) T:The second letter is better because of some beautiful expressions. Pick out them and share with your deskmate. Pick out the beautiful sentences you like: 1._________________________________________________ 2.____________________________________________________ 3.____________________________________________________ 4.____________________________________________________
5.____________________________________________________ Tips:the expressions expected to be picked out: Adjust, refresh, Relieve your stress, enrich your life, have a bad effect on, take it easy, more than Be supposed to do…, which…/ doing…
may be a good choice…/ If I were you, I would…
Purpose: It is a process of self exploration. In this way, the students can solve the problems of new words and deepen the impressions on some beautiful expressions.
Step IV
Practice (
10
minutes) Task 1: The teacher presents several pictures from the TV series of Journey to the West and guide the students to finish the sentences based on the pictures. All of the sentences are about giving advice. Purpose: get the students more familiar with the target sentences patterns. Task 2: Ask the students to give advice to different people in the school, such as guides, cooks, teachers, deskmates…
to guards to cooks to your deskmate to dormitory teachers to the headteacher to the English
Practical advice
teacher to …
Purpose: guide the students to talk about their own life with the help of the target sentence patterns. Tips: the two tasks are from easy to different, from semi- controlled to completely open. So that the students can master the sentences patterns step by step.
Step V Practical drill
( 12 minutes) 假定你是李华,你就读于衡水一中的好友范坤来信说他最近上课总是犯困。他为此很苦恼,请你根据现实情况给他写一封建议信。(词数100 左右)
Dear Fan Kun,
I quite understand the great trouble you are suffering from, just because the problem you are facing is very common among us students. Here are some suggestions for you. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
I hope you will get out of trouble sooner. I would be more than happy to see improvement.
Yours sincerely
Li Hua
Purpose: guide the students to talk about their own life with the help of the target sentence patterns. Tips: In order to make the practice more efficient, just ask the students to finish the second paragraph, in which the new sentence patterns will give them a lot of help. Of course, it is necessary for the teacher to remind the students to use some conjunctions to make the writing logical.
