Just now we watched a short video about some wonderful pieces of a football match. After watching it, do you feel excited?

So what will you think of when it comes to a football match? (passion, excitement, enthusiasm, teamwork, competition, winning and so on.) 1 What makes a football match? Two teams and each team consists of eleven players. Among them there is a player who wears the armband, who is captain of the team. People who control and supervise the match are referees. They usually use whistles to begin, pause or stop a match. When players are breaking the rules, the referees will use yellow card or red card to warn or drive away the players. The building which is used to hold the match is a stadium. The green land in the stadium is the football field and the people who watch the match are the audience. In a match, there will be goals scored by some player, so his teammates and supporting fans will celebrate for it. In a football match, players’ hands are not allowed to touch the ball, except the goalkeeper. If this happens, the referee should blow the whistle and pause the match, and let the other team have the ball. Of course, there is a football in a match. After the game, the captain of the team will be interviewed by a reporter on behalf of the whole team.

2 What may contribute to the winning of a football match? (good skills, strong bodies, team spirits, luck and the referee,---)

Let’s open the book on page 39 and learn a text called “winning isn’t everything”. Read the text and find out the answers to the two questions: 1 How many matches are mentioned? (Four) 2 How many teams are involved and what are they? (Four. The Eagles, the Kangaroos, a team whose name isn’t mentioned and the Bears.)

1st match

the Eagles VS the Kangaroos Which two teams are competing in the first match?

Which team won the game? What about the score? How did they win the match? The Eagles’ captain knocked the ball to the ground with his hand, and then kicked it and scored. We know players are not allowed to touch the ball with their hand whether they do it on purpose or by accident. In fact, that is a foul. The referee should have blown the whistle to pause the match and had the Kangaroos have the ball. But all these escaped and the Eagles scored a goal and they won the match. So in fact, they won the match by cheating. (Agree?) What did the captain of the Eagles say when he was interviewed? (We won, and that is all that counts.) Will the Kangaroos accept the fact that they lost the game willingly? (No) Supposing you are captain of the Kangaroos, what would you say if you are interviewed? (We are sorry about the result of the match and feel frustrated, but we will win back.) What might the referee think after the match? In fact, they made mistakes in the match and the goal should not have counted. (We must “look after” the Eagles more carefully in the following matches.) Did they look after the Eagles in the following match? (Yes, they kept a close watch on the Eagles.) What would you say to the Kangaroos? ( Revenge is a dish that should be eaten cold.

The pot call the kettle black.)

2nd match:

the Eagles VS another team Which two team competed in the match? (the Eagles and another team.) Who won the match? ( another team.)

Why did the Eagles lose the match? It seemed that the referees kept a close watch on them and they struggled and lost the match. But in my opinion, they lost the game because they were not a strong enough team, and they were not powerful. And naturally, they lost the game. Now both the Eagles and the Kangaroos could go home, but they had different performances. The Eagles The Kangaroos They went home angry and bitter. They went home and trained harder than before. They thought they lost the match because the They thought that they lost the game just referees had been unfair. because of bad luck.

3rd match: the Eagles VS the Kangaroos The two teams meet again. Before discussing the third match, i want to tell you something interesting. Who is the man? ZHu Yuanzhang He was the first emperor of the Ming Dynasty, but he lived a miserable and poor childhood because of the cruel ruling of the Yuan Dynasty, so hated the Yuan Dynasty. He made up his mind to overthrow the ruling of the Yuan Dynasty. This is Yuan Shundi, who is the last emperor of the Yuan Dynasty. In order to overthrow the ruling of the Yuan Dynasty, Zhu Yuanzhang must defeat Yuan Shundi.

Let’s enjoy an interesting description of the last fight. So now you must be aware of the feelings of the Kangaroos before the match. What would members of the Kangaroos think before the match? (We will defeat them.

We will win the game.

We will beat them into pieces.------) Did they keep their promise? Yes, because the score is 5:1! This is an abnormal score which could put the Eagles to shame. Which proverb can explain the shameful score of the match? Where there is life, there is life. Where there is smoke, there is fire.

Now let’s turn back to the first match. If the captain of the Eagles had stopped the match and let the Kangaroos have the ball, what would have happened? ( The match might have ended in a tie. The Eagles both had the chances of winning or losing the match, but they must have won respect, friendship and the honor of fairplay.)

4th match: the Kangaroos VS the Bears Which two teams were involved? Which team won the match? What about the score? What happened in the match? (The Kangaroos’

captain was neat the Bears’

goal. A teammate passed the ball to him, and by accident it hit his hand.) What a similar situation!

The Eagles The Kangaroos Captain’s choice He knocked the ball to the ground The ball hit his hand by accident. with his hand on purpose, and He stopped the match and let the then kicked it and scored. Bears have the ball. Result of the match They won the game. They lost the game. Relationship between hatred They became friends for the rest two teams of their lives.

And the captain of the Kangaroos was also interviewed by a reporter, what did he say? (they won. They were the better team.)

Were the Kangaroos willing to accept the fact that they lost the match? (Yes. They lost the match really because of bad luck.)

Compare what the two captains said after the match, who dared to say that proudly? Why?

(the Kangaroos’ captain because they had done their best. And they lost the match just because of the bad luck. And they know a famous saying about football: Since football is round so anything could happen in the football field.)

What is the most important thing in a match? Fairplay. What is more precious than winning a match? Friendship, honor and respect.

The 2002 Football World Cup was held in South Korea and Japan. There is a very interesting match involving South Korea and Italy. Even after 15 years, i can still remember it clearly. This is a family picture of the National Football Team of South Korea. It seemed that they were all gentlemen, they were friendly and kind. And this is a family picture of the National Football Team of Italy. Let enjoy some exciting pieces of the match.

Are they humans? No, they are animals. Are they playing football? No, they are killing people. What is ridiculous is that the referee was calling the Italy was fouling and gave a red card to Italy. You know, South Korea did win the game. But the whole country of Italy was shocked. They refuse any football player from South Korea to enter the Italian Football League, which is famous all over the world. Even visiting South Koreans are not welcome to Italy. Because what they did in this match hurt the Italian people deeply. They wanted to win the match at the cost of anything, which is not tolerated in a match. So lets emphasize again: What is the most important thing in a match? Fairplay. Because there is something more precious than victory.

Please read the text again to get a better understanding of the text. With what we have talked about just now and the text, try your best to finish the table and fill in each blank with only one word.
