The Olympic Games

Teaching objectives: To raise Ss’s ability of reading by doing fast reading and detailed reading, to find specific information by scanning, to get the main idea of the passage by skimming, and to express their opinions using what they have learned in the passage. The above goal is expected to be achieved through mainly by reading practices and speaking.

Teaching steps: Step 1. Lead-in : enjoy a song and a competition about a quiz on the Olympic Games to arouse students’

interest in the Olympics and to gain some relevant knowledge about the games.

Step 2.

Reading comprehension: Fast reading: Get students to go through the text quickly and get a clear structure and get the general idea of each part. Detailed reading:

* Go through part 2(para.2-4) and get detailed information about history and the development of the Olympics. They may discuss the exercise with their partners and present their answers later in class.

* Learn part 3 (Para 5~8) in detail. To know more about the athletes listed in the text, read the text by scanning and skimming. And divide the whole class into five parts

,discuss in pairs ,and try to complete the sentences. And ask stuents to introduce the athlete one by one in class.Ask students to make up a dialogue about their favorite athlete. And then to present their dialogue in class. This way, students can retell the whole Part 3 through oral practice.

* Read the last part aloud together and answer two questions to get students to have a better understanding of the spirits and people’s wishes for the Olympics.

* Summary. Fill in the blanks by using proper words to help students to review the whole text . In this part, the competition is still going on to encourage students to participate fully .

Step 3:

Post-reading: Discussion.

Discuss in groups of four . “What do you think of Liuxiang , a loser or a

winner?Why?”

In this case, students are supposed to express their opinion and some reasons to developing both their language skills and overall ability.

Homework:

Send an e-mail to Liu Xiang to encourage him, to express active attitude towards life.
