阅读理解中不可避免会遇到一些生词（部分是熟词新义），这要求同学们能根据上下文（语境）和构词法，迅速准确地推断出词义。这就是我们词义猜测题的考察内容。（见新课标要求第一条）

笔者将从词义猜测题的设问方式、类型及常见解题技巧，帮助同学们更好地解答词义猜测题。

一、词义猜测题的设问方式

u What is the meaning of “peer pressure” in this passage? u The underline word/phase in the first paragraph probably means ____? u The underlined word “them” in paragraph 1 refers to____

二、词义猜测题的类型：

根据题目的设问方式，我们把猜词题分成以下两类

（1）非指代型猜词题:根据语境推断出某个词义的意思（第一题和第二题）

（2）指代型猜词题：对 it，they，them等指代的对象进行判断。（第三题）

难度较高的是非指代型猜词题，我们将花较大篇幅介绍。

三、词义猜测题的解题技巧

1.利用上下文猜词

在文章中，有时作者为了避免重复或是表达相反意思，而使用相近或相反意思的词汇。

（1）表示顺接关系

常见的有and, or, like等连接的同义词

【2012湛江】

Two years ago the United States National Academy of Science launched the "Safe Drinking Water Is Essential" site. It was set up to provide high-quality scientific information about improving the safety of drinking water supplies. 52. What does the underlined word "launched" mean in the second paragraph? A.取消.B.改善. C.创办.D.改变. 【解析】句子为顺接关系。同学们可从下句“它被创立是为了提供高质量的科研信息（关于提高安全饮用水的供应）”。由“set up”可知“launch”

同义。文段大意：美国国家科学院创办了一个网站“安全饮用水是至关重要的”.故选C。

【2012佛山】Cell phones can be carried with us wherever we travel. Some phones can even let you take pictures. These images can be sent to other cell phones. 49. What does the underline word “images” mean? A. Pictures B. Messages C. Telephones D. Letters 【解析】段落中的句子明显为顺接关系。由文中可知“有些手机甚至能照相。这些照片可以被传送至其他的手机。”故选A.

(2)表示转折关系

如but, while, however, not at all 等词语。

【例】He is so homely，not at all as handsome as his brother. 【解析】根据“not at all handsome”,不难猜测“homely”的意思是“不好看的”

2.利用释义猜测词义

我们有时可在文章中找到类似be called, is, that is, namely，in other words, to mean 等对生词做出解释的引导词，或是用破折号“—”、冒号“：”等标点符号引出解释。

Mattel opened its first Barbie store in Shanghai, where girls can shop, eat, drink or even become fashion designers for their own Barbies. Fashion designers from all over the world have been called to make new dresses for Barbie. 64. What’s the meaning of the underline words “fashion designers” in the passage? A.珠宝设计师 B.发型设计师 C.舞台设计师 D.服装设计师

【解析】后文给出了fashion designers的释义“make new dresses for Barbie”。故选D。

【2012深圳】When had lessons at home with their governess Marion Crawford. Margaret was often naughty.

21. The word "governess" means ________. A. 服务员 B. 家庭女教师 C. 牧师 D.管家

【解析】文中提供了“governess”的释义“have lessons at home with governess”,故选B。

3.利用构词法猜测词义

在阅读文章时，我们总会遇到一些新词汇，有时很难根据上下文猜测词义，此时可以根据构词法推断词义。英语最基本的构词法(Word formation)有三种：派生(Derivation)，合成(Compounding)和转化(Conversion)。

n 派生法——在一个单词(词根)加上前缀或后缀，构成一个新单词。

加在词根前面的构成部分叫前缀，一般只改变词义。加在词根后面的构成部分叫后缀，它一般改变原词的词性，同时也改变词义。

如常见的否定前缀有：un-，dis-，im-，in-，mis- 常见的形容词后缀有: - ful, -ing, -ed, -y, -able, - ible, -ical, -al, n 合成法——把两个或两个以上的单词合成一个新单词。

有的可以直接写在一起构成一个新单词，还有的在词与词之间用连字符“-”构成一个新单词。

cold-blooded冷血的kind-hearted 心肠好的high-class高级的

nationwide全国性的break-water防洪堤pickpocket扒手

n 转化法——一种词类转化为一种或几种词类。

这种构词法词形没有改变，转化后的单词在意义上通常与原单词意义有密切联系。

face 脸— face 面对nurse护士

— nurse 护理

daily每日的— daily日报waste浪费— waste废物

38.The underlined word "quartered" means_________. A. 榨汁 B. 切成四份 C. 洗净 D. 炸碎

【解析】我们熟知“quarter”是“一刻钟，四分之一”的意思，不难猜测出quartered是“四等分”。

【浙江中考】We should feel the thankfulness for those who help us. What does the underline word“thankfulness”mean？

A.感恩 B. 宽容 C. 诚信 D. 奉献

【解析】根据我们熟知的“thankful”（感激的，感恩的），再根据构词法thankful + ness,可知

thankfulness 是感恩（名词）

【黄冈中考】

When the little boy finished, his father was speechless. The word “speechless” means ______ A. 毫无兴趣的 B. 寡言少语的 C. 胸无点墨的 D. 无话可说的

【解析】根据我们熟知的“speech”（说话），再根据构词法speech + less（无…的）,即speechless 的意思是

无话可说的。选D.

4.根据常识

运用逻辑推理能力、自身生活经验或生活常识，我们同样可以猜测出词义。

【2011广东】

For example, sunglasses are not just for fashion but they can also serve as a great way to protect your eyesight form UV rays.

64. What do the underlined words “UV rays” mean? A. 沙尘 B. 闪电 C. 紫外线 D. 超声波

【解析】根据常识可知，太阳镜不仅是时尚的标志，还可以保护眼睛免受紫外线的伤害。选C.

【2011佛山】

It was a great way to get his mind off what he had to do later. As they got close to the school, he could feel his heart beating. His hands were starting to sweat. He hated this! 48.What does the underlined word “sweat” probably mean? A. 触摸 B. 鼓掌 C. 出汗 D. 指点

【解析】根据常识可知，人紧张时，手会出汗。故选C.

5.指代型词义猜测题

正确选项符合两个特征：（1）前文中的重复词

（2）正确选项符合句义

Last year in the UK at least 45 people died and 900 more were injured in car accidents where drivers were using their mobile phones．Yet many people continue to use them while driving even though it is dangerous．

通过以上的介绍，相信同学们对阅读理解中的词义猜测题有了一定的了解。在阅读理解中，我们可以根据语境、释义、常识、构词法、上下文等进行猜测。综合各种信息，从而找出正确答案。
