Lesson Plan ---Book 8 Unit2 Cloning (Using language)
Teaching Content: Book 8 Unit2 Cloning (Using language) Teaching Objectives: ·Students are able to distinguish the advantages and disadvantages of cloning.
·Students are able to grasp the main idea of the tape and share their own ideas towards cloning.
·Students are able to raise their awareness about cloning animals’ health problems.
Teaching Aids: -blackboard -multi-media devices -handout and textbook Teaching Procedures: Warming Up: -teacher greets the students and review the passage learnt yesterday -teacher asks students “What’s the newest hi-tech currently?”
-teacher asks students “What’s your opinion of cloning?”
-teacher asks students “Will you clone your pet if you can?”
and students provide their reason -teacher shows students a video about “cloning dead pet”
Presentation: -students read the passage in the handout
-students underline the sentences of advantage and disadvantage towards cloning -teacher chooses students to answer and then checks the answers Listening Exercise: -teacher asks students “do you think cloning is cruel or not and why”
-students listen to the tape and circle the right information
-students listen one more time
-teacher checks the answers
1.Cloning will bring back to life.
2.There were 627 experiments before Dolly was successful cloned.
3.Cloning may help cure serious illnesses.
4. It’s a dead end.
5.Dolly the sheep was “middle-aged” when she was born.
6.So your grandmother would be able to start her life all over again and live much longer. -students listen to the tape again and finish the missing sentences in the handout. -students finish the chart on P17 in the textbook.
-teacher pick up students to answer the questions and checks the answers
Problems or dangers of cloning illnesses of older animals. donor animals. themselves. human beings.
Group discussion: -students work in group of six to discuss which extinct animals are worth restring by means of cloning.
Production: -students present their choices and reasons towards this question Wrap Up: -teacher summarizes the class and assigns homework Homework: -students write a report giving your reasons to persuade other people about your choice. Teaching Reflection: ·if the teacher provided more useful expressions, students could produce better presentation Advantages of cloning serious illnesses in humans. similar quality for sale. research on new plant species. animals. Handout 1 Is Cloning the Future?
Saving lives has always been an important mission of science. Now science, and indeed all society, is facing a new dilemma: whether or not to try and save more lives through human cloning.
The first cloning experiments in the 1950s involved frogs and toads. It was not until 1997 that scientists successfully cloned the first mammal, the now world-famous sheep known as Dolly. Cloning techniques have continued to improve since then, and today there are cloned mice, salmon, and cattle.
Some scientists want to apply the methods used in cloning animals to produce skin, organs, and other body parts for humans. One of these methods involves taking adult cells from the brain or blood and growing them into new tissues. Another, more complex, technique takes embryo cells and develops them into a wide variety of cell types and tissues. It is this planned use of human embryos that has resulted in controversy and criticism.
The cloning of human cells provides the potential to find cures and eliminate diseases. The dream of some researchers is to create a utopian world of good health. Others question whether it is right to "Play God" in an attempt to cure the disabilities and diseases of this world.
Some of the great hopes for cloning include the ability to perform transplants, whenever they are needed, using cloned organs. For example, people with lung cancer may simply have their lungs replaced with healthy ones. Scientists also look forward to the day when people in wheelchairs can walk again, and illnesses such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's Disease can be prevented.
Many people fear the effects cloning could have on our society. They imagine masses of identical people, and the production of "perfect" humans for warfare or slave labor. We might even see headless human bodies being stored at hospitals for their "spare parts." With such thought-provoking possibilities for the 21st century, human cloning will no doubt continue to receive widespread attention and scrutiny.
Handout 2 Listen again and fill in the blanks. RB: Xiao Qing, do you think cloning’s cruel?
XQ: What do you mean by that? The scientists are doing a wonderful job. Soon they may be able to 1_______________________________________! RB: Yes, I know. But doesn’t it seem cruel to you that it took 276 experiments before Dolly was successfully cloned? Think of all those live cells and eggs that died in order for Dolly to be born. 2_________________________! XQ: But, Rachel, be reasonable. Isn’t it always like that with a new science? This is the way people learn to do things better.
RB: I suppose so — but they also make the animals do such unnatural things. One poor cow was made to give birth to a bison. What was the poor creature to think when it saw its baby? XQ: I don’t quite understand why so many people are against cloning. I think the scientists need a bit of encouragement. Think of the benefits. Cloning may help 3__________________________________________. RB: Yes, I know and I agree with that. It’s just that I don’t agree with the methods.
XQ: Why not? RB: Well, I think it’s a dead end. Dolly the sheep was “middle-aged” when she was born because her DNA came from a middle-aged “mother”. Cloning your grandmother would mean a new baby started life as an old lady! XQ: Really? I never thought of that. RB: And it 4__________________. So the animals Cloning may not means be able that to 5_______________________. 6_________________________________________. XQ: Oh dear! And that was just what you and I were trying to avoid. In spite of all these, don’t you think scientists would still be able to solve the problems?
Answer of handout 2 1 bring people’s favorite pets back to life! 2 I don’t approve of that! 3medical science to produce cures for serious illnesses. 4 weakens the species.
5 there’s less variety in the species.
6 resist a particular illness and they might die out.
