Analysis of the text: The play King Lear is adapted from the novel with the same name written by Shakespeare. The text is a simplified version with modern English, so it will be not very hard for the students to understand. Being the first part of the play, the dialogues between King Lear and his daughters are considered as the most brilliant part in the play. By reading the text, students can get a further comprehension of the play and the writing style of Shakespeare. It is a golden opportunity to develop students’ interests in English drama and the language itself. Analysis of the students: The targeted students are senior in high school and they are supposed to acquire some certain abilities in cognition, which enable them to obtain, process, analyze and solve problems using English. Although many students have heard of, or even have read the play King Lear, it is the first time that the majority of students have seen the English version of the play. Therefore, it will be both interesting and challenging for students to read. Based on the personality of the teenagers, some fascinating activities are designed to encourage them to take part in the class and give them a platform to show themselves. Teaching goals: I . Multimedia facilities, a projector Teaching Procedures: 1.

Warming up by showing a poster handed out by “Shakespeare” to recruit some actors and actresses.

In the process, the teacher will get in touch with Shakespeare through the Wechat to check whether the information on the poster is true. During the conversation, the play King Lear is mentioned. 2.

Pre-reading---about King Lear

After the Wechat with Shakespeare, the background information about the play is presented on the screen to prepare the students for the reading. 3.

Reading

Step 1 Skimming (class work)

During the stage, the students are asked to skim the first paragraph to find out all the characters and the relationship between them. Intention: The students can be better prepared to read the play by knowing the main characters and their relationship.

Step 2 Careful reading (class work)

The students are required to finish reading the whole text and find out the answers of the following questions: ①.Why does King Lear want to give away his kingdom?

②. How is he going to decide who to give the best part of his kingdom to? ③. At the beginning of the play, of which daughter is King Lear most fond?

④. Which daughters are already married and which is not?

⑤. What are the names of the men who want to marry King Lear's youngest daughter?

⑥. Who tries to defend Cordelia? What happens to him when he speaks out? Then, the teacher checks their answers by asking some students to answer these questions. Intention: The students will get a basic understanding about the text by reading the play and answering the questions. 4.

Post-reading (group work)

After getting a basic understanding about the play, some activities are designed to increase the students’ comprehension about the theme of the play and the personalities of these main characters.

Activity 1 In six prepare a role-play. One plays the king, one plays Regan, and another plays Cordelia. The fourth person plays the Duke of Kent and will interview the three characters to find out what they really think. And the other two persons need to listen carefully and show us their opinions about the interviewees. Here are some questions to consider:

To King Lear: 1. Why did you decide to divide your kingdom according to how much your daughters said they loved you?

2. How can you be sure how much your daughters love you? 3. What do you think of your final decision? To Regan:1. Were you honest in your answer to the king? 2. How did you feel when you saw what happened to Cordelia? 3. Do you think the King behaved fairly? To Cordelia: 1. Why did you not answer your father’s question the same way as your sisters?

2. Do you think what happened to you is fair?

3. What will you do now? Intention: There is no such thing as standard answers to these questions, so students can give their own answers according to their understanding. This activity is designed to enable students to have a much deeper understanding about the personalities of these characters and the theme, or conflict presented in the play. Besides, it also makes a full preparation for the next activity —

the performance.

Activity 2 Act out the play in groups according to the plot of part one. It can be divided into three sections. The first section should be performed by King Lear, Goneril, Regan, Cordelia and the Dukes of Albany and Cornwall. The second part will be acted by King Lear and Cordelia. The third part will be performed by King Lear, Kent, Goneril and Regan. Take some basic props(道具)if necessary. Intention: In order to act out the play, students are required not only to be familiar with the language, but also to express the personalities of characters by adding some proper emotion and movements. Besides, only by performance can the essence of the play be unfolded before the audience. At the same time, the enthusiasm and interests of students can be inspired in the process of show.

Activity 3 After the performance, the audiences need to choose three best actors or actresses according to their pronunciation, body language and emotion.

Intention: By asking the audience to be judges, the teacher can help students concentrate more on the performance to improve their degree of participation. In addition, the best actors and actresses can get recognized for their excellent performance. 5.

Homework ①

Read the passage again and review the new words and expressions.

②

Imagine what will happen in the following parts and check if you are right by reading the text on page 17. Intention: On the one hand, reading is a good way to consolidate the words, phrases and even sentence structures learnt by the students in the text. On the other hand, only by reading the whole play can the students get an overall understanding about the theme of it.
