Teaching Aims:

Students will learn about RealCine, a virtual reality product which is supported by extraordinary technology by reading a business presentation, through which they are expected to improve their reading ability to find out specific information by skimming, listening, and scanning. Students are expected to learn about the features of a business presentation, and thus become more competent in reading a business presentation. Besides, students will be encouraged to consider whether the product deserves to be developed and how to make the best of the new technology.

Teaching Steps: Step 1: Warming up Show some pictures of 3D films. A warming up is done to arouse students’ interest in thinking about the technology behind 3D films. Step 2: Fast reading Skim the presentation and find out the name of the product, the technology behind the product and the advantages of using it for urban planning. Students are expected only to focus on and identify the most important information.

Step 3: Listening

Listen to the presentation and try to find out the paragraphs in which the specific information can be found (P44, C2). This step is to check students’

listening comprehension and analytical thinking skills.

Step 4: Scanning Read the presentation carefully and find out the detailed information about How RealCine worksl, Why it is better than films and How it can be used in other ways. Read four statements and decide whether they are true or false. Then find out a proper word from the text according to the given meaning This step helps students practice their scanning skills to get the detailed information about the presentation.

Step 5: Consolidation Complete a summary. Students will be asked to work in pairs and fill in each blank with a proper word according to what they have learned from the text. This step guides students to summarize the main idea of the presentation. Step 6: Reading Strategy Discuss the features of a business presentation. By giving some examples, students are expected to be aware that the language for a presentation should be clear and appealing, the information should be detailed and convincing, and the author needs to be objective. Step 7: Mini-debate The whole class will be divided into two groups. They are required to discuss whether RealCine deserves to be developed. In this step, students will cooperate with group members and try to list out as many reasons as possible to support their decision. Students are expected to express their ideas freely, from which they can have a deep thought about the new technology.

Step 8: Discussion Discuss in groups of four again on how virtual reality can be used to make our classes more interesting and our school life more colorful. Each group is expected to give at least two reasonable suggestions. In this case, students are motivated to think about making good use of new technology to benefit our daily life. Step 9: Homework Write a short passage on how they can make their classes more interesting and school life more colorful with RealCine in about 120 words. Thanks for your attention!
