S: Dinosaurs..

T: That’s right. What do you know about the dinosaurs?

(Use some pictures of dinosaurs to help students talk about something about the dinosaurs. At the same time, present some information, thus students can know more about the dinosaurs)

Tyrannosaurus Rex 霸王龙

Baryonyx 恐爪龙

eats fish It is very big

It eats meat

drinks a lot of water It has sharp teeth It runs fast

lives near lakes It does not fly or swim

runs but does not fly

Dinosaurs lived a very long time ago. Dinosaurs ruled the earth. Dinosaurs lived more than 65 million years ago. Dinosaurs lived long before man came to the world. Some dinosaurs had sharp teeth and some had flat (扁平)teeth. The ones with the sharp teeth ate meat and the ones with the flat teeth ate plants. Some dinosaurs ate meat and some ate plants. Some could fly and others could run very fast. We learned that not all dinosaurs are very big. Some are very small.

T: Ok, do you often see this kind of animals now? Why? S: No T: Do you think it is possible to clone dinosaurs? S: Yes/No... T: ...

Step 2 While-reading: Fast-reading (Time: 5mins) (5mins)Main idea of each paragraph

Please read the passage quickly and find out the main idea of each paragraph.

Para. 1

explain the impossibility of cloning dinosaurs

conclude that it's just a dream Para. 2 Tyrannos

Baryony剑龙stegosa

Para. 3 introduce the topic of the passage.

Step 3While-reading: Careful Reading (Time: 16mins)

(8mins) 1. True or False

Scan the text and tell the following sentences are true or false.

(1) Scientists are still experimenting with cloning mammals because they think it can make money.

F

because the cloning of mammals is still a new science (2) The animals that have disappeared from the earth, like dinosaurs, can be brought back to life through

cloning.

either impossible or unsuitable

F

(3) There is not enough diversity for cloned animals to overcome new diseases.

T

(4)

If we can clone any extinct animals, we should let them live in a zoo.

F

It would be unfair to clone any extinct animals if they were to live in a zoo. A suitable habitat would be needed

for them to lead a natural life. (5) The DNA of animals more than 10, 000 years is not suitable for cloning, for it can't survive so long.

T

(8mins)2. Read the text and choose the best answer according to the text. (1) The writer of the text__C___

A. is excited by the possibility of cloning fierce and extinct animals

B. believes that extinct animals can be brought back to life by cloning C. thinks it impossible or unsuitable to clone extinct animals like dinosaurs

D. dreams of dinosaurs returning to the earth (2) The film Jurassic Park is popular because _A____.

A. people are interested in the subject of cloning

B. all the actors are dinosaurs

C. it was directed by a scientist who clones dinosaurs

D. it proves very interesting (3) Which of the following is true? __D__ A. Mice were cloned in 1983. B. Dolly the sheep was the first cloned animal. C. The name of the cloned cow is “Bison”

D. China was successful in cloning mammals. (4) The reasons why a group of cloned animals all die of the same illness do NOT include__C__.

A. they have the same arrangement of genes

B. there isn’t enough diversity in the group for it to overcome illnesses

C. the illness is a new one

D. their arrangement of genes can not resist that new disease (5) We can infer from the text that__B__

A. scientists are experimenting to clone dinosaurs B. dinosaurs will never return to the earth C. cloned animals will only live in the zoo D. the DNA of dinosaurs can only survive 10, 000 years

Step 4Post-reading: Summary (Time: 16mins)

(8mins)Please listen to the record and fill in the blanks according to this passage. From time to time people suggest that dinosaurs can be possibly be 1. brought

(bring) back to life through 2.cloning

(clone) , unfortunately, with what we know now, this is either 3.impossible

(possible) or 4.unsuitable

(suit). There are many reasons:

Firstly: 5.Perfect

DNA is needed. Secondly: There is not enough 6.diversity (diverse) in the group to 7. overcome

8. illnesses

. Finally: A (n) 9.suitable

10. habitat

would be needed for the cloned extinct animals. Based on what we know now, you cannot clone animals that have been extinct longer than 10,000 years. So the chance of 11. dinosaurs

ever returning to the earth is merely a 12. dream

. (8mins)Discussion 1. Why did the dinosaurs die out? 2. There are many endangered animals in our life. Please list some of them, and then think about what should

we do to protect them.

Answers: 1.

(1) One early theory was that small mammals ate dinosaur eggs, thereby reducing the dinosaur population

until it became unsustainable.

(2)

Starvation was another possibility: Large dinosaurs required vast amounts of food and could have

stripped bare all the vegetation in their habitat. (3)

Climate change. The planet slowly became cooler. Lower temperatures caused ice to form over the

North and South poles and the oceans to become colder. Because the dinosaurs were cold-blooded–

meaning they obtained body heat from the sun and the air–they would not have been able to survive in

significantly colder climates. 2.

milu deer

panda

tiger

antelope

polar bear

ect.

protect their habitats and create new ones set up nature reserves or natural protection area protect the environment

limit hunting stop buying clothes made of their furs

ask people to protect wildlife
