I have a dream I. Warming up
I’m sure most of you have got a dream. So what is your dream?(ask two students). Now I’d like to show you the greatest dream ever.(Listen to a part of it). Now tell me what is your understanding of this dream.(ask a student). Yes, it’s about equality, fairness (discrimination).
Actually it’s from a very famous speech—I Have a Dream. (look at the screen) Yesterday we got to know about the start of the civil rights movement in the US from a black woman Maryann’s diary. We know at that time black people in the US received unfair treatments but most of them lack the courage and confidence to fight against such unfair situation. So they need some spiritual leaders. Which black leaders was mentioned in yesterday’s lesson? Martin Luther King. Yes, he is the person who made this world famous speech—I Have a Dream.
And here on the screen is a brief profile of him. Martin Luther King was born on January 15, 1929. He started his career as a minister(牧师)
in 1948. He directed the peaceful march on Washington, D.C. of 250,000 people in 1963, and then he made his famous speech —
I Have a Dream. Martin was shot and killed on the evening of April 4th, 1968.
(students read it together)
II. Appreciating the speech. (I)
Now let’s turn to page 28 and listen to the speech together. (after listening) What kind of leader was Martin?
(Enthusiastic, inspiring, and good at giving speech.) (II) There are some difficult points in this speech. (Briefly explain some difficult points) (III) Now please work in groups of four, and underline the sentences that you like best. I will give you five minutes to prepare. Then I will ask some groups to read together to the class their favorite. So, after you decide on the sentences, do practice reading together. Make sure it sounds right and good. (three minutes) (most students would choose the repetition part) (ask two groups to read to the class) I have a dream that…
I have a dream that…
I have a dream that…
Let freedom ring.
Let freedom ring. (the sentence patterns on the blackboard) I agree with you too. Those sentences are also my favorite.
They share the same sentence pattern. What do we call this writing still? Repetition. (on the blackboard)
Now compare the sentences here on the screen with those in your text book, and think of this question? What kind of effect repetition has on a piece of writing? I hope one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.” Then on the red hills of Georgia the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood. And Mississippi will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice. .. For one thing, they are easy to remember for they all begin with the same pattern. For another, they are all about the same topic but shown in different ways, which helps to intensify the message the text wants to convey. If you use it correctly, you can make your argument more powerful. (IV) Besides repetition, other writing skills are also used in this speech. For example, quotation “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.” is quoted form Declaration of Independence. Quotations help to make your points convincing by showing that there is some support from some famous people. Can you find out another quotation in this speech? What writing skill is used in this sentence?
The state of Mississippi will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice. 密西西比州将变成自由和正义的绿洲。
比喻
in English its counterpart is metaphor. By using metaphor we relate abstract ideas we want to convey to some things the readers are
familiar with. Therefore it would be easier for us to gain the readers’
support.
Can you find out another metaphor? What about this part? black men and white men, Jews and Gentiles, Protestants and Catholics,…
Comparison.
Can you find another example of comparison in this speech? (V) Students read the first part of the speech together. Please read it with expression.
III. Learning to use repetition The use of repetition, quotation, and metaphor in a writing helps to increase its effect. And here let’s try to use repetition in the following speech. Work in groups of four, and work out a speech on environmental protection. (divide the class into three big groups.)
Ladies and gentlemen, I’m very glad to stand here and give you a short speech
about environmental protection.
And, it has been more urgent then ever before for us to take action.
Have you noticed that… . Have you noticed that… . Have you noticed that… .
The beautiful world we were once accustomed to has been damaged by degree.
We are making the situation worse, when we… . We are making the situation worse, when we… . We are making the situation worse, when we… . Such acts should be taken as shameful. How could we treat our mother earth like this when we are getting so much benefit from her? Without her _______,we can’t… . Without her _______,we can’t… . Without her _______,we can’t… .
Therefore, my dear friends, there should be no more delay in action. Let’s
all contribute to this great cause to save both our mother earth and ourselves.
IV. Homework
Finish the speech
