Teaching analysis

This passage is a speech given by an IOC member which introduced the history from the Ancient Games to the Modern Games. By learning this passage we should convey the valuable Olympic spirit to the students and encourage them to never give up in life. What‘s more, this is also good teaching material to develop students’

reading and speaking ability.

Teaching aims: 1.To help students get general idea about the text.

2.To make students familiar with detailed information about the text. And to do some practice to consolidate what have been taught.

3.To get the students know the spirits of the Olympic Games and use such sprit to encourage them.

Teaching focus：To learn the common elements of a speech and try to identify them.

Teaching difficulty：How to help the students master the reading strategies of a

speech.

Teaching approach

1. Pair work and group work.

2. Discussion.

Teaching procedures：

Step 1 (5min) Lead-in

Show some pictures about sports and the Olympic Games to the students and get them to See the pictures the teacher showed to them and discuss the questions and give their answers to the questions.

Reading(25min)

Fast reading:

1.What is the speech about?

2. Where were the ancient Olympic Games held?

3.Who restarted the modern Olympic Games?

Careful Reading:

Play the tape of the text to students and let them sum up the main ideal of 4 parts and fill the blank.

Further Reading:

Let the students to scan the text again to find out the features of a good speech

Read

the text and answer the questions

Skim the text and divide the passage into four parts and get the main idea of each part, and then finish the blank.

Discuss in groups:

Sum up the main features of a good speech.

Step 4 (10min) Post-reading activities

Share the information you have found with your group mates to make a short speech for the coming Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.
