Teaching Aims 1. Enable students to master four skills of guessing words. 2. Guide the students to use the skills of guessing words and pay attention to the context when doing reading comprehension. Lead-in 1)

Ask students if they have problems in doing reading comprehension. 2)

Show a picture of Li Hua, telling students he is going to teach them some skills of guessing words today. 3)

Ask students to follow Li Hua’s instructions.

Step 2

Tasks Students are asked to finish the following tasks. Task 1 :

1) Ask students to finish the exercises of guessing words on the handout. Ask students to underline the key words which help them guess the meaning of the underlined words. 1. Shopkeepers may have to spend extra hours to deal with problems, such as shoplifters, who always take away things from the shop without paying for them.

Rule: Students compete to answer the questions about guessing words. Each question has its value ranging from $100 to $2000. The more difficult the question is, the more money it is worth. Finally, the group which has the most money will win the game.

How to deal with stress in your life? Firstly, take regular exercise and keep a balanced diet. Even just 10 minutes’ walk a day is enough to build vigour, thus making you energetic all day. Remember not to skip meals, because it will not only leave you feeling tired, but also irritable instead of staying peaceful. Besides, try to spend an hour meditating in bed before you go to sleep. Think about some jokes or interesting experiences which will make you smile. What’s more, instead of avoiding dealing with your stress, why not face them directly? Though you may not be able to completely get rid of them at a time, you could lessen them to some degree. Finally, always think positively. You may face a lot of setbacks and challenges in your life. Becoming a positive thinker will bring more pleasure in life, and as a result, you will face less stress.
