1) listening---- enable the Ss to know the two methods that the archaeologists use to date the bones they find. 2) reading---- enable the Ss to know the life of early people ( their relationship, the different tasks of men and women). 3) speaking---- enable the Ss to think and express their ideas about man’s and women’s tasks in the society. 4) writing---- enable the Ss to write down their opinions in English skillfully.

Step I Revision and Lead-in 1.

Review the reading text---- A visit to the ZhouKouDian Cave; Show some pictures, ask the Ss to talk about the life of early people( homes, clothes, tools and food) 2.

Leading-in

Show some pictures of the early people; Ask: 1) How do the archaeologists know the bones they found in the ZhouKouDian Cave belong to the early people? 2) How do they know the date of the bones? 3) What methods do they use? Step II Listening Ask the Ss to turn to page 42; 1)

Listen to Part 1, ask the As to get out the two methods----(1. the layer method; 2. radiocarbon dating) and fill in the layers of the “wastepaper basket” diagram. 2)

Listen to Part 2, fill in the blanks to get some information about radiocarbon dating. 3)

Finish Ex3 of the listening. Step III Reading 1.

Introduce the Upper Cave Man of 18000 BC; show some pictures and ask the Ss to think about the feast of the early people at that time . 2.

Scanning---- to find out the food that Lala’s family prepare for the feast. 3.

Skimming----play the tape for the Ss to listen. At the same time, the students are asked to finish the True or False questions. 4.

Careful reading----find the answers to the following questions. 1).Which jobs did Dahu do? ( make tools, catch fish, cut up meat, scraper the fish and welcome guests)

2).Which jobs did Lala do?(collect nuts and fruit, prepare the meat over the fire)

Group work---- in groups , discuss what the possible work division was between men and women at that time. Mens’ tasks: making tools, fishing, making fire, protecting the family form wild animals, cutting up meat. Women’s tasks: collecting nuts and fruits, making and sewing clothes, looking after baby, preparing food, doing housework. Step IV Post Reading

Ask the As to discuss : Did men and women have separate responsibilities (分工) then ? If so , what were the differences between them? Men’s tasks: more dangerous, require more strength Women’s tasks: more careful
