Analysis of the Teaching Material

This reading is designed to

introduce

Xiamen city in the form of

a dialogue, including its location, climate, people, places of interest,

etc. The aim, on one hand, is to enhance Ss’

understanding of Xiamen and on the other hand, is to enable Ss’

to master the way of introducing a city.

Part II

Analysis of the students

They are Senior high school students, Grade1. They have the interest and enthusiasm to learn English and have learned some expressions of the locations. Students need to know how to introduce and describe a city or hometown in their daily life. Students of this stage are quick in thought and they are eager to show what they know and they have a certain ability to read .But they are lack of vocabulary to describe a city vividly and clearly. Most of the students are afraid to talk in public, so the class atmosphere is not very easy..

Part III

Teaching Aims

Language objectives:

(1) To know some new words and sentence patterns

a、Words:

attractive, fortunate, pretty, tourist, bother, nuisance, rent, district, approach, harbor,

gorgeous, architecture, starve, park.

b、Sentence patterns:

It’s have been six years since we saw each other.

It’s the first time I’ve visited your hometown.

This is one of the most attractive places I’ve been to.

I feel fortunate living here.

Ability objectives:

1. Train the ability of collecting and dealing with information, develop their abilities of getting new information, communication and cooperation 2. Learn to describe some cities.

Emotional objectives:

Develop students' love with their hometown. Develop their awareness of cooperation. Key points: Master the key words and sentences. Improve the reading ability and grasp the way of introducing a city. Difficult points

Develop the ability of analyzing and processing information. Introduce a city using the target vocabulary and sentences. Part IV Learning Methods

Cooperative method and induction

The cooperative learning method is suitable for students to accomplish pair-work and group-work. It can stimulate students' initiative and improve students' ability of thinking. And induction is useful for students to understand and master the difficult point.

Part V

Teaching Procedures Step1. Lead-in and pre-reading

Lead in: The teacher talks about one of her recent travels with the pictures showing on the screen. In this step, the teacher uses the target sentence structures intentionally and writes them on the blackboard. Pre-reading:

The teacher shows some pictures of Xiamen on purpose of teaching some new words to describe a city, which draw their attention to the theme of the reading material and get them ready for the following reading. Step 2. Fast-reading

Make a prediction,

“What do you expect to know about Xiamen from the text?”

and collect answers. Look through the dialogue and check their predictions.

Design reason:

Excite students' desire to know more about Xiamen. With the prediction in mind, they will definitely be eager to read the dialogue to find the answer Step 3 Careful-reading Task1: A table. Read the dialogue in pairs. Complete the table with key words. Design reason: to get the students better understand the key words in the passage. Task 2: T or F questions.

Do it individually first. Then, call back the answer in class and repeat the key sentences which give us the answers.

Design reason: to get the students to understand the sentences better. Step4 Post-reading Task 1: Challenge yourselves. Deal with some words practice on the screen to master the new words better. Task 2: Make a summary. Let the students summarize the most important fact of this dialogue by answering when, where, who, what and how.

Task 3: Work in pairs to make a dialogue to introduce our hometown and act it out. The following words or sentences are expected to be heard in your conversation.

Words:

since we last saw each other. This is the …time I’ve visited your ... This is one of the most attractive places I’ve been to.

Step 5．Homework 1．Revise the words and phrases 2．Write a passage about their hometown

Design reason: Homework is so important and necessary for them to master the knowledge they learned after class. The purpose of the homework is to give the students a clear idea of how to express their problems and revise the articles. Part VI Teaching reflection During my teaching，I’ll try my best to get my class alive and encourage the students to talk with each other in English. I think the general aim of English teaching is to improve the ability of using English.

I’ll use this to guide my teaching.
