Module6 Unit1 You can play football well.
Analysis of the teaching material: This lesson contains both dialogues and listening. The language goals are helping students to assess oneself correctly and improve their language skills. It’s of great importance for the students to master the struc-ture and use the languages.
Teaching aims: Knowledge object: The students should remember the following new words and phrases: well, team, really, good at , catch, goalkeeper, think, fantastic and fan. They can be familiar with the sentence patterns: Can you…? Yes, I can. / No, I can’t. You can play football well. You are good at basketball. Ability object: The students should be able to make up similar dialogues. Their four basic skills will be im-proved. Moral object: Arouse the students’ interest in English learning. Train them to cooperate with others. Teaching important points: The new words and phrases, as well as the sentence patterns: You can jump really high. You can catch the ball well. Teaching difficult points: How to help the students use the language and act out their own conversations. Teaching aids: A multi-media computer, a table tennis racket and a ball, a football, some target language hanging charts, and some magnetic clasps. Teaching methods: Communicative approach and Task-based language teaching. Study methods: Teach the students how to be successful language learners and get the students to form good learning habits. Teaching procedures: There’re mainly five steps in this lesson. They are warming-up, presentation, practice, consolidation and homework . Step1: Warming up.(5mins.) 1. Let’s chant and do! Clap, clap, clap your hand. Stomp, stomp, stomp your feet. Run, run, run fast. Jump, jump, jump high! 2. Greetings. (The warming up aims to bring the students into an atmosphere of the English language , and arouse their interest in English learning.)
Step2: Presentation. (18mins.) 1. Preparation. Divide the class into two teams: clever team and smart team. And introduce the rules of the competition. (The competition makes the kids more active in class and arouse their interest in finishing the tasks.)
2 .Lead- in. T: Do you like doing sports? I like doing sports very much. I like to swim. I like to run. I even like to play basket ball. Because I think doing sports can help us keep healthy and strong. So what sport can you do? (This activity can quickly bring the students into the real communication situation, and practice their oral English.)
3. Teach the new words and phrases. By talking to the class, review the two phases: run fast and jump high. By inviting two students to play ping pong, teach the target languages: He can play ping pong well. He is good at ping pong. And teach the new word: well. During this procedure, help the students to assess others correctly. By showing the real actions and watching the pictures of the screen, teach the new phases: pass the ball well, catch the ball well, goalkeeper, and football team. During this procedure, help the students to assess others further. Meanwhile, get the students to try to write down the new words on the paper correctly.
(This step aims to get the students to be familiar with the important structures , cultivate their ability in thinking, reading, speaking and writing and lay a foundation of the next part. )
4. Listen and answer the two questions on the screen. T: Do you still remember Lingling? What does she want to do today? Let’s listen and find out the answers. Question1: Does Lingling want to be in the football team? Question2: Can she play football well? While listening, ask the students to try to imitate the sentences, and pay attention to their pronunciation and intonation. (This activity can improve the students’ listening and speaking skills and help them get a main idea of the text.) 5. Read the text loudly by yourself and answer the four questions on the screen. Question1: Can Lingling run fast? Question2: Can Lingling pass the ball well? Question3: Can Lingling jump high? Question4: Can Lingling catch the ball well? Finally, draw a conclusion: Lingling wants to be in the football team. She can ……well, but she can’t
……
So she can be a fantastic goalkeeper. I’m her first fan. While checking their answers, write down the main clues of the text on the blackboard. Put the hanging charts beside the writing with the help of the magnetic clasps. By the way, explain the new words: fantastic and fan. Help the students to retell the story together by watching the clues on the blackboard. (This activity enables the students to learn further about the target language. Meanwhile, it can improve the students’ listening, reading and speaking skills .Through listening, finishing the task, and my PPT explana-tion, the difficult points will be dissolved.)
Step3: Practice.(7mins.) Task1: Who is your big star? T: As for the word”
fan”, actually, I’m Zhang Yining’s fan. I Iike Zhang Yining very much. Because she can play ping pong very well. And she is good at ping pong. I dream that one day I could take a photo with her. So who is your big star? You can use the sentence patterns: He/She can ……well. He/She is good at……
(This task gets the students to practice the target language and learn to communicate with each other.) Task2: Finish the blanks on the screen with the help of the pictures. Sun Yang can swim well. Yao Ming can catch the ball well. Zhou Jielun can sing well. (This task can help the students to practice the target language further more.)
Step4: Consolidation. (9mins.) Make an interview with your friends. You can use the sentence patterns: Can you…? Yes, I can. No, I can’t.
Then when you have finished your interview , you are supposed to tell us your results. You can use the sentence patterns: ……can……well, but he/ she can’t….…
(This task can put the students into the real communication situation, and cultivate their ability in speaking and cooperating. What’s more, it makes them feel the happiness of success.)
Step5: Homework.(1min.) There are 3 tasks. You can choose any one you like. Task1: Read the text loudly for three times. Task2: Retell the story with your friends or parents. Task3: Talk about yourself with your friends or family. (The homework contains three levels, which cater to different kinds of students. It can make the students’
ability into full play.)
Blackboard design: On the right side of the blackboard, there are the main clues of the text and some key words and phrases. On the left side of the blackboard, there are the results of the competition between the two team.
Teaching reflection: This lesson aims to improve the students’ four basic skills. Through Task-based language teaching, it makes the students the real masters in class while the teacher acts as the director and brings their ability into full play.
