Teaching Material

: New Senior English for China Student’s Book 2 Teaching Topic:

“Cultural relics” in Unit 1 Teaching Type: Listening and speaking Part 1 Analysis of the teaching material This unit carried out various teaching activities about the topic “Cultural relics” and the emphasis of this period is placed on developing students’ listening , speaking abilities. We will deal with the following parts: Listening to a video about the history of the Amber Room and retelling the story by creating a situation; Listening Task on page 44; holding a debate. By studying it, it can arouse the students’ interests in English and motivate their enthusiasm to express themselves in English as well as raise their awareness of protecting the cultural relics. So this lesson is very important in this unit. If the Ss can master it well, they will learn to apply what they have learnt in class to the daily situation and feel more confident in learning English well.

Part 2 Analysis of the students My students in grade 1 are active in thoughts and curious about all kinds of English-related activities. They show great interest in cultural relics, especially for the long history of China. They have accumulated a certain number of vocabularies and mastered some learning strategies and skills with preliminary ability of listening and speaking. So it is not difficult for them to understand the listening materials. However, they lack scientific listening skills and deep thinking. They may have difficulty in making up a dialogue and forming an informal debate. At the same time, the difference in students’ personality and English proficiency are very large, so I will design my lesson step by step to meet the needs of different students and let students make full use of online resources about old buildings home and abroad as well as the debate pattern and prepare topic-related materials.. Para3 Teaching Aims According to the new standard curriculum and the syllabus, the teaching aims are the followings: 1.

Knowledge objects (1)Get the students to learn the history of the Amber Room and the Forbidden City (2)Help the students to learn some useful new words and expressions. 2. Ability objects (1) Enable students to catch and understand the listening materials. (2) Develop the Ss’ ability to get special information and take notes while listening and train their speaking skills. (3) To train the Ss’ abilities of studying by themselves and cooperating. (4) Enable students to learn how to debate informally on the topic. (5) Let students write a short report about the debate. 3. Emotional or moral objects (1) Enable students to know more about cultural relics and stimulate their sense of protecting cultural relics (2) Develop students’ sense of group cooperation and teamwork. Part 4 Teaching Important and Difficult Points

The important points (1) Developing students’ listening and speaking abilities. (2) Enable students to master different listening skills. (3) Enable students to hold a debate on the topic. The difficult points (1)How to help students make up a dialogue in three minutes. (2)Develop students’ ability of collecting ,analyzing

information and solving problem by means of the debate Part 5 Teaching and Learning Methods 1. Communicative Approach(交际教学法) 2. Whole Language Teaching(整体语言教学法) 3. Task-based Teaching and Learning (任务教学法) 4. Total Situational Action (情景教学) 5. Cooperative learning and discussing. Learning methods; study independently and cooperatively Part 6 Teaching Aids; Multi-media, blackboard, computer and so on Part 7 Teaching Procedures Step 1.Revision (Individual work__6___min) Play a video about

“The history of the Amber Room”

While watching, pay attention to “who, what, when, where, why and how” and take some notes. After watching, ask the students to tell some pieces of the history one by one by creating a situation in which the students are asked to play the role of a guide of the Amber Room and pick one to retell the whole history.

Suggested answer:

The Amber Room, made of several tons of amber and decorated with gold and jewels, has an amazing history. At first, it was designed for the palace of Frederick I. Then in 1716 Frederick William I gave it to Peter the Great, and it served as a small reception hall of the winter palace. Later, Catherine II had it moved to her summer palace outside St Petersburg. She told her artists to add more details to it, which made the room one of the wonders of the world. But in 1941, some of the Nazis secretly stole the amber room when the two countries were at war. In less than two days, 100,000 pieces were put inside some wooden boxes and there is no doubt that they were sent to Germany and the room remains a mystery. Recently, the Russians and the Germans have rebuilt a new one by studying old photos of the former Amber Room.

Purpose: To activate students’ background knowledge, practise the students’

listening and speaking skills ,lead in to the topic today—the Forbidden City as well as the protection of old buildings.

Step 2.Listening Task 1 Present photos of the Forbidden City--- the world-famous old buildings in China and ask them to discuss two questions: (1) what do you know about the Forbidden City ? (2) what was it used for before? (3) when was it built? Suggested answer: (1)it is also called the Palace Museum; (2) it is where the emperors once lived (3) It was built in the fifteenth Century.

2 Introduce the background information about the Forbidden City and ask the students to read it together. After reading, explain some useful words to the students. The Forbidden City has a history of about 600 years. The large-scale construction of the palace extended from 1406 to 1420. Totally 24 emperors of the Ming Dynasty and Qing Dynasty ruled here, and was off-limits for the common people. 3 Turn to page 44 and do some listening exercises (1) While listening, pay attention to :who are they? what are they doing? After listening, summarize the main idea of the listening text. Suggested answer: Two girls are talking about the Forbidden city. (2) Listen twice and fill in the chart. While checking the answer, explain some difficult points and repeat the questions which appear in the listening text and can be used in the next part--role-play. Part A

Reason for its name Because______________ were never allowed into the palace while the emperors ruled China. Number of rooms

Reasons for the number _________________ 1.______is a special number in Chinese culture. 2. It _________________ the Emperor of Heaven who has 10,000 rooms in his palace Part B How old is it?

Nearly ____________old. How many Emperors lived there? _______Emperors from the Ming Dynasty and ________from the Qing Dynasty. What is it used for now?

Suggested answer: ordinary people / 9999 / Nine / shows respect to 600 years / Fourteen / Ten / A national Museum.

(3 )According to the listening text, create a situation in which Susan is going to take her friend Mike to see the Forbidden City, ask the students to make a dialogue with the following 5 questions in 3 minutes. Then, ask four or five pairs of students to present their dialogues in front of the rest of the students if time permitted.

Suggested answer: Why is it called the Forbidden City? Who was allowed in it in the ancient world? How many rooms does it have? Why not build 10,000 rooms? How many Emperors lived there in all/altogether?

_____________________

Sample dialogue: Mike: Hi, Susan, long time no see. How is everything going? Susan: Not so good. Mike: What happened? Susan: You know the final exam is coming and I’m a little worried about my results.

Mike: Cheer up. I believe you can make it. Susan: Thank you. Mike: You know, it is my first time to come to China. It is really beautiful. The old building, the special custom, and beautiful scenery, everything is amazing! and I am really interested in its culture. Susan: oh, it seems we have come to the right place. Mike: How wonderful! I am always dreaming about visiting the Forbidden City. Susan: Now you see, your dream has come true! Mike: Wow, it is so splendid! But why is it called the Forbidden City? Susan: Because ordinary people like us were never allowed into it while the emperors ruled China. Mike: So who was allowed in ? Susan: Well, the emperor’s family, officials and a large number of servants. Mike: Mmm, so many people in it, how big is it? Susan: There were 9999 rooms when it was built. Mike: 9999 rooms? That’s so strange! Why not 10,000? Susan: Eh, It’s because nine is a special number in Chinese culture. Mike: Oh, I see. How many Emperors lived there together? Susan: Fourteen emperors from the Ming Dynasty and ten from the Qing Dynasty. They lived in it for about 500 years. Mike: That’s so interesting. I can hardly wait to have a look at it. Susan: Let’s go!

Purpose: To lower the difficulty of this part to make Most Ss take part in the activities by finishing different listening tasks, especially for the Ss who have trouble in English and help students understand the listening materials better and at the same time deepen their understanding and speaking ability by giving chances to the students who do well in the tasks to show themselves

Step 3. A debate 1.After completing the tasks about the Forbidden city, summarize the importance and value of it and tell the students that they should feel proud of such splendid old buildings in China, and show some pictures of an old garden in Dongguan: Daoshengyuan Garden, which was torn down in 2013,is one of the four famous gardens and sat near Keyuan Garden. Now three were destroyed, only Keyuan Garden left. It is said that Keyuan Garden will be replaced by modern buildings too, ask students to discuss if it is right to pull down the old buildings like Keyuan Garden? Suggested summary: The Palace Museum, known as the Forbidden City in the West, is a mirror of history, an ocean of knowledge, a paradise of cultural relics and a treasure of human civilization.

2 Then the class will be a stage for students to show their strong ability in debating, which is fully prepared by students in the preview task. One debating team is outstanding among other teams and is picked out to present their wonderful debate in front of the other teams. Meanwhile, the other teams work as judges together with one chief judge (a student).

3. After the debate, the teacher makes a conclusion and the chief judge announces the result. Suggested conclusion: Good job! Their views sound very nice, right? And I think you all have been well-prepared to defeat the other side.I have to say both sides have shown great dedating ability in today's fierce competition. I'm sure we're all deeply impressed by the intelligent debaters. Thanks for your hard work and let's give ourselves a big round of applause. Now it's time for the result. Which side will win this wonderful debate? And who will be the best debater today? Now the chief judge, please. Suggested results : We think that the result is going to be very close. And I think all contestants need to be congratulated for their outstanding efforts. Congratulations! The winner of today’s debate is ________ And the best debater is ___________. Congratulations!

Purpose:to arouse students’ interest in English and practice their speaking and listening skills as well as stimulate students’ deep thinking on the protection of cultural relics.

Step4 Homework Write a report about the debate. Purpose: to apply what they have learned in the writing, and practice their writing skills.

I disagree. I disgree with you entirely. I’m afraid I don’t agree.

I;m afraid you are wrong there. I wouldn’t accept that for one mintue.

You can’t really mean that.

You can’t be serious.

3 Suggested debate 1、正方一辩陈述本方观点(用时不超过2分钟)。

Should our city preserve old buildings or destroy them? I believe that different people have different opinions. According to my experiences, I think that we should preserve them. I like to use the following reasons to explain why I think so. The first and important reason is that every old building represents an important piece of history. There is no doubt that old buildings like Ke Yuan Garden can reflect the culture, customs and life style of a certain time. For example, the Forbidden City in China, where ancient emperors have stayed, has had a longstanding history, as long as over 2,000 years. Through it, we can not only know about many famous historical events, but can also know that ancient people have mastered very advanced architecture techniques.

2、反方一辩陈述本方观点(用时不超过2分钟)。

As we all know, whether a city should preserve its old, historic buildings or destroy them and replace them with modern buildings remains a problem to be discussed. Some people think that old buildings should be well preserved because they are the witness of the past, but as far as I’m concerned, not only does preserving them cost a lot of money and manpower, but they also take up a lot of places, which can be made use of to build houses for the people who have no place to live in, or to build a shopping centre to improve our economy. So we don’t think it is a wise choice to preserve them. 3,正方二辩向反方一辩手提一个问题,采用一问一答的形式。每次提问时间不超过30秒钟,正方二位辩手的累计回答用时不得多于1分。

Pros: As we know, three other famous gardens, Xinyu Garden, Daosheng Garden , Xuepu Garden in Dongguan have already been pulled down. Once Ke Yuan Garden is torn down, where can we enjoy the old buildings in Dongguan?

Cons: Please don’t worry, some old and important buildings are well preserved in our Guangdong Province, such as Qinghui Garden in Shunde, Liang Yuan garden in Foshan.

4、反方二辩向正方一辩手提一个问题,采用一问一答的形式。每次提问时间不超过30秒钟,正方二位辩手的累计回答 用时不得多于1分。

Cons: I would be glad to hear your opinion of preserving the garden, my question to your honorable debaters is: Why do we pay to preserve these old buildings which are now useless to us? Pros: I’m afraid you are wrong there. First, some old buildings like Ke Yuan Garden are not useless. On the contrary, they are art works. Second, our government will keep it as a reminder of the glorious past .

5,

反方三辩向正方二辩手提一个问题,采用一问一答的形式。每次提问时间不超过30秒钟,正方二位辩手的累计回答

用时不得多于1分

Cons: Why don’t we build some modern apartment buildings for those who need a place to live? Pros: Ke Yuan Garden is a symbol of history and the peoples who lived in the past. As a matter of fact, it provides us with a place for our heart to live. 6 正方三辩向反方二辩手提一个问题,采用一问一答的形式。每次提问时间不超过30秒钟,正方二位辩手的累计回答用时不得多于1分。

Pros: According to your logic, if we’d like to enjoy some old buildings, we must travel to other cities, which also costs time and money. Do you think it is convenient? Cons: If time doesn’t permit, you can enjoy them on TV or in the video. If you are really interested in them, then it doesn’t matter how hard it will be.

7、双方四辩可在本方二、三辩手回答问题后进行补充发言,时间不得超过1分钟。

Cons: Let’s draw a conclusion. In order to make full use of the land, develop economy and improve our living conditions, tearing down old buildings is a good choice. That’s all I want to say. Thank you. Pros: There is no doubt that old buildings are not only a symbol of our old history and culture, but also the pride of our city. Therefore, we must keep it. That’s all, thank you! 8、自由辩论:由双方一、二、三、四辩完成。双方交替发言,正方先开始,各队累计用时4分钟。

CONS: My fellow debaters, As we all know, new things are certain to replace the old and old buildings are no exception. They look so strange in such a modern society. We should tear them down to provide more space for new buildings.

PROS: Let me take an example, which may be improper. If your great grand mother still lives in your home, and her clothes are unfashionable or out, sometimes look strange, and what she says everyday is not so in, then will you replace her with a young one? (APPLAUSE )

CONS: But you must admit that it really costs too much money and time to take care of these old buildings, and we still cannot prevent time from destroying them. I have to say it is really a waste of money and time. So why not tear it down now?

PROS: Old buildings represent a culture. They can calm us down when we are watching them; they can give you comfort, inspiration as well as a head trip. Once it is pulled down, we will have nowhere to put our heart.

CONS: My fellow debaters, you know old buildings take up a large area, while China has a large population.

We need a large number of apartment buildings for them to live in. In this sense, old buildings are useless.

PROS: I’m not so certain. Compared to numerous apartment buildings, old buildings are a very small part. What’s more, old buildings attract visitors from all over the world, which promotes the development of economy.

CONS: No, I don’t think so really. Tourism brings us money, but at the same time, where there are visitors, there is waste. Environment becomes worse and worse because of tourism.

PROS: You know what? You are straying from the main point!we are talking about old buildings now, not tourism.

CONS: I disagree with you entirely. The protection of old buildings and tourism are closely connected.

PROS: That means you are against developing tourism, too?

CONS: You are missing the point. Developing tourism is right, but not by the old buildings, which can be better used in other ways. 9、反方四辩总结陈词(用时不超过3分钟)。

4 Debater conclusion: CONS: Firstly, I’d like to say it is really difficult to preserve the old buildings. They need repairing from time to time, and sometimes even rebuilding is needed. We have to admit that most old buildings have been rebuilt in some way. Secondly, now that they need rebuilding, and after we invest so much time and money, they are still empty there. Why not build some apartment buildings or a big shopping centre that can be fully used by us. From what I concluded above, it is not a wise choice to preserve the old buildings. 10、正方四辩总结陈词(用时不超过3分钟)。

PROS: My fellow debaters, you know what, when I heard about the news that Ke Yuan Garden is likely to be pulled down, I am shocked. I think most people feel the same way. Old yards, trees in front of the door, Hutongs, and paper-cuts as well as some old memories will be lost with the disappearance of the old buildings. What a pity it is! We can never recall what kind of a life our grandparents lived! We can never feel the time when they didn’t have enough food, and how they lived without TV. I can’t imagine once the old buildings are gone, what we can tell to our sons or daughters? Maybe we can only hold a picture telling them, “This is the house where your grandparents once lived!” Is it only pictures that we can leave to our sons or daughters? As we know, old buildings are a mirror of history, an ocean of knowledge, a paradise of cultural relics and a treasure of human civilization. Why don’t we leave such a valuable gift to our sons or daughters?
