Step I Warming-up 1.

Ask students two questions to lead in the class. 1) How many of you have computers in your home? 2) What do you usually do on the computer? 2. Look at the pictures on PPT and discuss what they have in common.

Step II Pre-reading Prediction

1642: The computer began as a calculating machine.

1822: the Analytical Machine was built by Charles Babbage.

1936: The computer grew rapidly both in size and in brainpower. 1940s:Computer had grown as large as a room.

1960s: the first family of computers was connected to each other.

1970s: Computers were used in officers and homes.

Now: Computers connect people all over the world together.

Retell the passage I began as an calculating machine in 1642. In 1822 I was built as an analytical machine. In 1936 Alan Turing built a universal machine. As the years have gone by,I have been made smaller and smaller, but I got cleverer and cleverer, quicker and quicker.
