Analysis of the teaching material This is a reading passage about California. It introduces the history of California and describes the great historical events happened in various times. It also tells us when, how and why different people from all over the world have been immigrating to California. It explains to us the reasons why it will be a simple multicultural community in the 21st century. The passage helps to develop Ss’ culture awareness and cross-culture communicative skills.

Teaching aims: (1) To learn some detailed information about the history of California.

(2) To develop the Ss' some detailed reading skills through reading activites. (3) To train the Ss 'word-guessing ability by experiencing the pragmatic functions and interdisciplinary problem-solving ability of English. Teaching important points

Teaching procedures: I．Warming up and Lead-in

2. Analyze the App homework yesterday ——

Analyze the App homework yesterday, finding out Ss’ drawbacks in reading. Lead in the teaching aims which focus on improving the detailed information reading skills and word-guessing skills

Ⅱ．Reading 1.

Pre-reading Look at a map of USA, and find out where California is. 2.

(3) Play a “smash golden eggs” Game, let students find out the answers to four quizs which can be found on “The Russians and Gold miners” part. (4) Match the items events with people based on “Later arrivals and most recent arrivals”

Post-reading English is a crucial tool of communication. In this part, I tend to train the Ss 'word-guessing ability by experiencing the pragmatic functions and interdisciplinary problem-solving ability of word-guessing skills. put forward a open-ended question:

What makes the USA the strongest country of the world as far as you are concerned ? Let Ss discuss in groups by applying the knowledge they know to solving the question. Using PPT courseware, show some relevant lines which contain the words that Ss didn’t come across before, and let them guess their meanings. Meanwhile, during

the presentation material, arouse Ss’ awareness of patriotism. Relevant PPT pages are as followed:
