what bells are made of bronze unique in design? It is known to all, they are of great

【课堂活动2】

Read through the letter and design some gap-filling exercises(at least two) with the help of your group members. Example: Big Feng _____ played basketball as a young man also fights hard to protect China’s past. (who\ that) Big Feng To The Rescue His friends and family call him “Big Feng”

because he is very tall and played basketball as a young man. But he is also big in a different way---he fights hard to protect China’s past. His real name is Feng Jicai and he has written many novels about life in China. Several years ago, however, he put down his pen for a while and began to protect the cultural relics in Tianjin, where he lives. Once someone asked him why he no longer wrote, he replied that at the moment he felt protecting cultural relics was more important. Feng loves his hometown. He believes that old things must be given a place next to new things, or people will soon forget their great past. He does not make speeches to get others to help him in his projects. Instead he goes out and does what he can

himself. If others follow him, so much the better. One of his biggest projects was to protect the oldest street in Tianjin. Along that street some shops had done business for seven hundred years. Although the city government rebuilt this street, they did save its oldest building. Another project was more successful: he persuaded the city government to buy some land in the centre of the city so it could not be sold for businesses. This area is very important for the history of Tianjin. It was here that the city was first built during the Song Dynasty. Later many treasures were found here. To Feng, digging down into the earth is like reading page after page of a book. Each dynasty found in the earth is like an interesting story. Not long ago he and other writers and artists took photos of the old pasts of Tianjin. The photos were put into a book which was very popular. The money from the book helps his projects. Once, an old man asked Feng to sign the book for him, saying he would give it to his grandson who was not yet born. Feng was glad to do it---he knows that the past is not only for us to enjoy but also for the children of the future. _____________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________

【课后补充阅读】

The Aswan Dams The Aswan High Dam was designed to control the Nile River. The huge dam controls flooding and stores water for times of drought, it is equipped to provide hydroelectric power. These benefits however do not come without a price tag. Hussein M. Fahim, who has been studying the impacts of the Aswan dam since 1963, writes "I view dams as engineering works, supposedly constructed to serve people; they, of course, have their technical specifications and requirements, but their potential humanistic implications should neither be overlooked nor underestimated." Engineers and governments must carefully weigh the benefits and the cost of any new technology. Huge environmental projects such as dams must entail even more thought and consideration than a new car engine or a faster microprocessor.

3

The High dam was actually the second dam at Aswan, the first one having been built in 1889. At the time Egypt was controlled by the British and they were interested in increased irrigation capabilities for cash crops, such as cotton. Due to the irregular flooding pattern of the Nile river and increased water demands, the dam had to be raised on 2 occasions (1912 and 1933) in order to ensure its continued usefulness and safety. When debates began again over raising the dam a third time, suggestions were made to possibly build a new super dam. It wasn't until Egypt experience a revolution in 1952 that the political climate allowed the feasibility of a new dam to be properly studied. The new dam, the Aswan High Dam, was a technical marvel, being "5 kilometers long at its crest, and 1 kilometer thick at its base, and rises 107 meters above sea level." With the dam's hydroelectric capabilities, the Egyptian government strives to obtain the maximum benefits available from every gallon of water that flows down the Nile. And, while most people would agree the flood control and the electricity the dam provides helps economic growth, the cost of these benefits must also be examined. When the Aswan Dam was built, the country of Nubia was flooded. The Egyptian government made arrangements for the Nubians to be relocated, but their lifestyle was destroyed. In fact many of the nomadic tribes in the area were not warned of the changes that would be happening to the river, which affected their routines in caring for their livestock. Many people have left the settlements that were created for them and returned to the lake's edge, trying to recreate their lost culture. Dams, like any other technical "advancement", need to be analyzed not only on the basis of their perceived economic benefits and their dollar cost, but also on their environmental, and social impacts as well. The question we should pose as we strive to better the world is not "can we", but "should we?" Taj Mahal

The Taj Mahal is one of the greatest masterpieces of architecture (建筑) in the world. It was Emperor Shah Jahan who ordered the building of the Taj Mahal in honor of his beloved wife. The Taj Mahal, one of the greatest monuments (纪念碑) of India, has been listed among the eight wonders of the world. This monument was built in the name of love. It is also considered to be one of the eight most splendid historical structures of the world. This white marble (大理石) structure was the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan’s gift for his dead wife. He loved his wife so much that he ordered the best artisans to create a design as there has never been, and something that cannot be copied. Having refused hundreds of designs he finally accepted this one. He is said to have personally monitored the construction of this building.

The structure of the Taj Mahal combines ingredients of Persian, Indian, Islamic and Turkish styles of architecture. It took twenty-two years to complete this architectural wonder. Twenty thousand people worked on this great project, which cost the Mughal emperor thirty-two million rupees (卢比).

In 1983, this great monument was announced by UNESCO to be one among the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Millions of tourists see this structure every year.
