Teaching design for Unit 1 Women of Achievement

Period 1 Warming-up and Reading

(乐平三中

洪莹莹) Part 1. The analysis of students The students I teach are juniors in high school. They are in different English levels. Some are active in class and good at English while some have a poor English basis. So I design class activities and tasks to arouse their interest in English and improve their English levels. Part 2. The analysis of teaching material

The teaching material is from unit 1 reading in book 4. The reading passage is about how Jane Goodall worked with chimps in their environment and helped people understand and help the life of these animals. Part 3. The teaching aims

1. knowledge aims

a. Students are able to grasp new words and phrases.

b. Students can learn about some great women.

2. ability aims

a. Develop and improve students’ reading abilities.

b. Enable students to describe a person in English and express their opinions bravely.

3. emotional and cultural aims

a. Encourage students to learn from great women and achieve their own goals.

b. Inspire students to care about and show love for animals. Part 4. Teaching important and difficult points

1. Teaching important points

a. Understand the whole passage.

b. Develop students’ reading abilities and reading skills.

2. Teaching difficult points

a. Describe a person in fluent English.

b. Help students’ t to set up correct values. Part 5. Teaching methods

a. Task-based language teaching method

b. Multi-media teaching method

c. Group-discussion teaching method Part 6. Teaching process

Step 1. Lead-in

1. T plays a song called Fly and asks Ss to pay attention to the repeated lyrics. 2. Do a guessing game to guess who she is according to descriptions.

(This step can arouse students’ interest in the lesson.)

Step 2.Warming-up

1. T shows some pictures of great women.

2. T plays a video about Jane Goodall and Ss describe the last scene in the video.(Let students learn some background information and arouse their interest in the passage.)

Step 3. Pre-reading

1. T shows some pictures about Jane Goodall and the titile. Then ask Ss to predict what the passage is about according to the title and pictures. (Learn to predict the content of a passage.)

Step 4. Reading

Fast-reading

Task 1: Get SS to read the passage quickly and answer the following questions:

1.

Who is the student?

2. What animals did she study? 3. What’s the main idea of the text?

It is

about how Jane Goodall worked with _______________ and helped people ________________ the life of these animals.

Task 2: Get Ss to match each paragraph with its main idea.

(Through fast-reading, students can get the main idea of the text.)

Careful-reading

Task 1: Get Ss to listen and read para.1and put the verb pharases in the right order:

a. begin to wake up and move off

b. either feed or clean each other

Task 5: Read para.4 and answer the question: what are the achievements of Jane? working with animals in their own environment

Three

Post-reading

Task 1: Retell the text

(In this step, I design different forms of exercise for students, which can enhance their reading skills and train their abilities to get detailed information.) Step 5. Group-discussion

Questions: what do you know about Jane Goodall? What can you learn from Jane Goodall? Rules: Divide Ss into several groups and each group has to choose a reporter. The reporter ask group members questions and write down answers. Afterwards, reporters go to the platform to report their discussion results. Example and expressions for discussion 1. Discuss the first question. Reporter: What do you know about Jane Goodall? StudentA: She is a …person, who…

StudentB: She was so…that…

StudentC: 2. Discuss the second question.

Reporter: What can you learn from Jane Goodall?
