Aims:

To help students learn about the -ing form as the Subject and the Object.

To help students discover and learn to use some useful words and

expressions.

To help students discover and learn to use some useful structures. Teaching tools: The blackboard and the multi-media Procedures: Step 1 Warming up Reading the text A Pioneer For All People.

Language is learned in context. So let’s review the text learned yesterday by reading it aloud. Step 2 Discovering useful words and expressions. In pairs do the Exercises 1,2 and 3on page 11 and page 12. Step 3 Learning about grammar 1. Read and identify. Read the text again, paying attention to the sentences which use the -ing form as the Subject and the Object. Since then , finding ways to grow more rice has been his life goal . (L.12) As a young man , he saw the great need for increasing the rice output . (L.14) ... Dr Yuan searched for a way to increase rice harvests without expanding the area of the fields . (L.18) However, he doesn’t care about being famous.(L25) He enjoys listening to violin music, playing mah-jong, swimming and reading.

(L.27) Spending money on himself or leading a comfortable life also means very little to him. (L.28) Just dreaming for things , however , costs nothing . (L31) Dr Yuan awoke from his dream with the hope of producing a kind of rice that could feed more people . (L.33)

Consolidate by doing exercises. To consolidate you’r understanding, you’ll be given 10 minutes to go over exercise 1--5 on page 12 and page 13.

Step 4 Explain the usage of the -ing form. 一．The -ing form as the Subject 记住：

It is+ no use, no good, useless, a waste of time...+doing

对比：

It is+ necessary, important, one’s duty...+to do

二．The -ing form as the Object 1.

有些动词或短语动词后常用V-ing admit（承认）, avoid(避免)，consider, can’t stand（不能忍受）, dislike, enjoy，escape（逃脱、避开）, feel like, finish, imagine, keep, mind, miss（错过）, practise, suggest…

2.动词短语中的to为介词，需用动词-ing形式作宾语。

devote…

to, be devoted to, lead to, look forward to，stick to(坚持)，get / be used to（习惯于…），

contribute to...,

turn to…

3. want, need, require +v-ing /to be done

4. 在allow, advise, permit后直接跟-ing作宾语，如果有名词或代词作宾语，则构成allow／advise／permit sb\sth to do

5.forget, remember，regret后跟-ing形式（doing）表示已经发生的动作；后跟不定式(to do )表示将要发生的动作。

6.动词go on, mean, stop, try, be used to, can’t help后跟-ing形式和跟不定式区别较大，须注意。

Teaching refection：

Strengths: 1. All the teaching procedures are coherent and the transition is natural. 2. The teaching is student-centered. 3. Students cooperate well and are fully involved in the learning activities. 4. The desired teaching objectives are achieved.

Weakness: The time is limited for them to do more exercises.
