Introduction: In this lesson, students are expected to know the knowledge of earthquake and they will be helped to improve their reading skills. With teacher’s guidance they will have a better understanding of the text----A night the earth didn’t sleep. Teaching aims: 1.To guide students express some phenomena before the earthquake. 2.To help students learn about the Tangshan earthquake. 3.To help students get the main idea of the text.

4.To help students identify examples of the attributive clause in the text. 5.To cultivate students’ awareness of protecting lives.

Teaching content: Warming up, Pre-reading, Reading Important points: 1.

Improve students’ reading skills: scanning and skimming. 2.

Help students analyze the structure of the text. Difficult point:

Step I: Warming up

Show students a piece of news which is about Italy earthquake.

Good morning everyone, have you heard the bad news? Please look at the power point and guess what happened.Can you describe how terrible the earthquake was?

(The earth was shaking, all the buildings fell down, many people died or injured, many children became orphans.)

Step II: Pre-reading (1)

Here are some pictures about Tangshan earthquake which happened in 1976. (2)

Let’s have a discussion.

Can we avoid or at least reduce the loss caused by earthquakes? Can we foretell earthquakes? What do you think will happen before an earthquake? I’ll give you three minutes to discuss these questions with your partners. Cows, pigs and dogs become too nervous too eat.

The mice will run out of the fields looking for places to hide.

The water in the wells will rise and fall. Walls of the wells in village will have deep cracks.

There will be bright light in the sky. Step III: Fast-reading Ask students to read the text quickly and find out the main idea as well as the topic sentence in each paragraph.

Today we are going to learn another earthquake which happened in Tangshan. Now let’s come to the text A night the earth didn’t sleep, lets see what happened to Tangshan. Now please read the text by heart and find out the main idea of the text. And what’s the topic sentence in each paragraph? The text mainly talks about an earthquake that happened in Tangshan in 1976. Paragraph 1 2 Topic sentence Strange things were happening in the countryside in northeastHebei.

Everything began to shake and it seemed that the world was atan end.

3 4 Everywhere they looked nearly everything was destroyed.

All hope was not lost.

Step IV: Careful-reading

Ask students to divide the whole passage into three parts and meanwhile pay attention to the details. Then ask some students to answer true of false questions.

Ask students to have a discussion to talk about what should we do to protect ourselves if an earthquake happened. And then ask some students to answer the question. Step V: Sentence analysis 1.Mice ran out of the fields looking for places to hide.(现在分词做伴随状语) 2.But the one million people of the city, who thought little of these events, were asleep as usual that night.（定语从句）

Step VI: Appreciation

Ask students to read the sentence together and share their ideas about life. Step VII: Summary Summarize what we have learned in this lesson. Step VIII: Homework
